We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Local Government Attorney to join our Fort Myers office.
The ideal candidate will provide comprehensive legal services to local government entities, including advising on legal matters, representing clients in litigation, and ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal laws.
Key Responsibilities
- Legal Advice and Counsel Provide expert legal advice to local government officials and agencies on a wide range of issues, including governance, public records, sunshine law, and ethics.
- Litigation and Representation Represent local government entities in civil litigation, administrative hearings, and other legal proceedings. Manage and oversee the work of outside counsel as needed.
- Policy and Regulation Draft, review, and interpret ordinances, resolutions, contracts, and other legal documents. Ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
- Legal Research and Documentation Conduct thorough legal research and prepare legal opinions, briefs, and other documents. Stay updated on changes in laws and regulations affecting local government operations.
- Training and Compliance Conduct training sessions for government officials and employees on legal matters, including new legislation and compliance processes.
- Contract Management Negotiate and draft contracts, interlocal agreements, and other legal documents on behalf of local government entities.
- Risk Management Advise on risk management strategies and handle investigations related to ethics violations, fraud, and other legal issues.
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.
- Admitted to the Florida Bar and in good standing.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in local government law or related legal fields.
- Strong understanding of municipal law, public records, sunshine law, and ethics.
- Excellent legal research, writing, and analytical skills.
- Strong negotiation and communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines effectively.
- Commitment to ethical practices and upholding the law.
- Board Certification in City, County, and Local Government Law.
- Experience representing school boards or other educational institutions.
- Familiarity with Florida's legal landscape and local government operations.
