Nursing Practice Leader - Perioperative Nursing

University of Iowa Health Care Department of Nursing is seeking a 100% Nursing Practice Leader to assist with various nursing initiatives and processes within Perioperative Nursing. The Nursing Practice Leader for the Perioperative Nursing Division provides leadership in clinical care coordination/specialized nursing care, clinical education of nursing staff and health professionals, or use clinical nursing expertise in improving nursing and health care through the management of staff education and development.

Provide Leadership and Direct Care for Specialized Patient Population

  • Lead changes in nursing care based on systematic evaluation and evidence-based research.
  • Assure the competency of staff in perioperative nursing care.
  • May provide specialized patient care.
  • Maintain and update equipment and supplies used in providing specialty care or services.
  • Nursing research experience.
Specialized Services for Nursing Care
  • Conduct and incorporate findings from evidence-based research into clinical practice.
  • Design, develop, and implement technologies that assist in point of care documentation.
Provide Education
  • Provide broad/deep level of knowledge of specialty to healthcare members/patients/students/residents.
  • Communicate detailed, complex medical and technical information to a variety of audiences.
Compliance with Internal Policies and External Regulations for Safe and Effective Care Delivery and Health Profession Education
  • Utilize advanced knowledge and skill of compliance requirements.
  • Assist in implementation and development of procedures, share responsibility for Quality Assurance plan with supervisors.
Human Resources Management
  • Supervise care delivery of clinicians and students/residents, providing evaluative feedback and recommendations regarding performance.
  • May hire, develop, and manage the performance of staff and assure compliance with UI policies and procedures.

Clinical Competency Training and Development
  • Knowledge of training and development processes, tools and techniques to develop clinical skills of students, residents and staff.
  • Oversees other staff in the implementation of competency-based T&D programs for individuals, teams, and departments.
  • Consults on the standard process of creating individual competency development plans.
  • Applies different learning theories and approaches to find the most suitable for the individual.
  • Assists in designing and measuring the results of adult learning programs for a specific group of people.
  • Designs critical adult learning programs for the organization that are in line with learning and development strategies and competency skill gaps.
  • Mentors' others on creating quantifiable objectives for closing gaps.
Clinical Performance Improvement
  • Knowledge of the factors contributing to quality patient care, treatment, and education; the ability to influence these factors in a positive way.
  • Evaluates treatments or procedures for effectiveness using an evidence-based approach.
  • Reviews the results of clinical performance assessments and recommends process improvements.
  • Leverages technology to facilitate the sharing of clinical performance or outcomes data.
  • Implements established performance improvement policies and trains employees on these policies.
  • Recommends to licensed health care providers or guides others in the selection of treatments, patient care techniques or patient education in an effort to improve clinical performance.
  • Leads members of a multidisciplinary team in evaluating the organization's clinical performance.
Clinical Policies and Standards
  • Knowledge of and ability to use industry standards, policies, and procedures relevant to function and organization.
  • Ensures compliance with standards for different types of clinical environments.
  • Describes existing and evolving standards and procedures and their impact on organization.
  • Exercises independent judgment and takes action with exceptions and special issues.
  • Collaborates with other functions in establishing and documenting joint standards.
  • Participates in the development of clinical policies and practices.
  • Describes impact of standards and policies across medical specialties.

 

Percent of Time: 100% 
Schedule: Primarily daytime hours, Monday-Friday with occasional flexibility to support 24/7 workforce. Occasional administrative call for off-shift, weekend, and holidays.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Nursing or related field. If Master's degree is in a related field Baccalaureate in Nursing is required
  • Current license to practice nursing in Iowa
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience in Perioperative Nursing   
  • CNOR Certification is required.
  • Demonstrates skills for leading change and implementation of evidence-based practice.
  • Demonstrates excellent written and verbal communication
  • Demonstrates skills in leadership/management role.
  • Demonstrates excellent interpersonal and interdisciplinary team leadership skills.
  • Proficient in computer software applications

Desired Qualifications:

  • Member/involvement in professional organizations​​​​​​
  • Professional certification in relevant nursing or clinical area is highly desired
