SUMMARY
The mission of Ocean Hour Farm (OHF) is to serve as a center for education, scientific research, and demonstration of regenerative agricultural practices. The 43 acre property lies just across the street from the Narragansett Bay, making it an ideal location for highlighting the critical connection between land and ocean health. The vision of the farm is to provide a living example of regenerative agriculture and land stewardship – an integrated system where plants, animals, and people heal ecosystems while producing food and fiber for the community. The OHF Education Department works with numerous local schools and organizations to provide environmental education experiences to local youth that highlight this interconnection between ocean, land, and human health and develop ecoliteracy skills.
The 2025 Summer Education Internship is an ideal opportunity for a high school-aged learner who is passionate about environmentalism and interested in exploring careers in environmental education, regenerative agriculture, and/or environmental science.
THE EXPERIENCE
The internship starts off with a brief orientation to Ocean Hour Farm and our work. This includes opportunities to shadow staff members who work in different departments including livestock management, crop production, and ecological monitoring. The intern will have two main focuses: 1) assisting with Ocean Hour Farm’s youth summer camp education programs, and 2) maintaining and developing the new Youth Education Garden.
During our summer camp programming, the Education Intern will work alongside the Tide to Land Education Apprentice and Education Program Associate to prepare for and facilitate educational activities with youth on topics ranging from soil science to regenerative agriculture practices such as composting and companion planting.
The Intern will also lead on maintenance and development of the recently built Youth Education Garden. Maintenance involves planting, weeding, watering, harvesting, and other tasks. Development projects will involve further bed construction, new plantings, and assisting with new projects to continue curating the space for educational usage. Throughout the summer, they will lead on one design project on the garden site, with guidance from the Education Program Associate.
By the end of the internship, this individual will have gained group management and organizational skills as well as a greater understanding of educational program design with environmental focus. They will also develop their regenerative agriculture and permaculture design skills, having the chance to shadow our crop production team and apply their learnings to the Youth Education Garden space, as well as through participating in weekly group work days and skill shares.
