JOB DESCRIPTION
John Wood Community College is seeking a passionate and dynamic Instructor of Music to join our faculty. This full-time, tenure-track position is responsible for teaching a variety of music courses, directing ensembles, and fostering student engagement in the performing arts. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in music education, performance, and curriculum development, with a commitment to student success and community involvement.
This position includes teaching 15 credit hours per semester, which may include day or evening classes. Classes may be taught at any JWCC location in a structured setting, online, hybrid, or in an Open Learning Center. Classes taught will be a variety of music courses such as Chorus, Vocal Show, Class Piano, and Music Theory. This position will be expected to direct and grow the JWCC choir and vocal performance ensembles. Additionally, they will establish and maintain relationships with area high schools and the regional music community to create visibility and recognition for the program as well as to aid recruitment.
Requires a willingness to be involved in activities including professional development, committee membership, curriculum review, academic assessment, and participation in systematic planning for program evaluation.
KEY RESPONSIBILIES
- Teach music courses such as Chorus, Vocal Show, Class Piano, and Music Theory.
- Direct and grow the JWCC choir and vocal performance ensembles.
- Develop and deliver engaging, student-centered instruction in traditional and online formats.
- Advise and mentor students pursuing music studies.
- Participate in departmental initiatives and assessment activities.
- Collaborate with faculty and staff to promote the music program within the college and the community.
- Establish and maintain relationships with area high schools and the regional music community to create visibility and recognition for the program as well as to aid recruitment.
- Assist with recruitment efforts to grow student enrollment in music courses and ensembles.
- Maintain accurate records of student progress and provide constructive feedback.
- Participate in curriculum development, assessment, and continuous program improvement efforts.
- Engage in departmental meetings, college committees, and professional development activities.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
- Requires a Master of Music (MM) or master's degree in a closely related field plus eighteen (18) graduate hours in music.
- Teaching and/or conducting experience is required.
- Choir directing experience and teaching experience through multiple delivery methods is preferred.
- The successful candidate must be fully credentialed per Higher Learning Commission and Illinois Community College Board standards upon date of hire.
Skills and Competencies:
- Strong knowledge of music theory, performance, and pedagogy.
- Proficiency in using instructional technology and online learning platforms.
- Ability to work collaboratively within a team-oriented academic environment.
- Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Commitment to student success and excellence in music education.
- Experience in an educational or public sector setting is a plus.
Work Schedule:
- A typical work schedule for a full-time faculty member at John Wood Community College includes a combination of teaching, office hours, and service to the college. While specific schedules may vary by department and course load.
- The position may require additional duties outside normal work hours and contracted workdays including travel to and from educational facilities.
SALARY:
- This is an exempt position with an estimated base salary range of $31,921.00 - $99,844.00. Salary is determined by the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) and is commensurate with education and experience.
- John Wood Community College recognizes the valuable contributions of faculty members who take on additional responsibilities beyond their primary teaching and service obligations. In certain cases, faculty may be eligible for stipends to compensate for extra work that aligns with institutional priorities and needs.
