The Johns Hopkins Department of Medicine (DOM) is an international leader committed to the progress of biomedical discovery, teaching the next generation of doctors and scientists, and the improvement of health in our neighborhood and around the world. Our department is made up of an amazing group of people who together provide cutting-edge patient care, maintain some of the country’s top internal medicine training programs, and conduct more externally funded research than almost anywhere else.

With 660 faculty members, 700 secondary / voluntary faculty members, 650 trainees, and nearly 2,500 staff members across 18 academic divisions, the DOM is one of the largest Hopkins departments. Our department provided care in over 290,000 clinic visits (at 20 locations) and 100,000 procedural and ancillary services encounters, staffing occupational clinics at 60 locations across the country, and was the primary attending on 25,000 inpatient admissions at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, and other health system affiliates, generating more than $567 million in revenue for the hospitals. This position is responsible for oversight of a JHH expense budget of $150 million, and a university budget totaling $570 million comprised of nearly $200 million in research, $180 million in clinical services, $135 million in institutional services and support, and $55 million of philanthropic / other revenues each year.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Chief Administrative Officer of Medicine is the administrative leader for Medicine for The Johns Hopkins Hospital (JHH), Department of Medicine, the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, and wherever JHU School of Medicine (SOM) faculty and providers are deployed. The CAO has overall responsibility for the successful development, implementation, and advancement of programmatic strategies and initiatives for the Department of Medicine. The incumbent, along with faculty leaders, leads the development, coordination, and integration of internal medicine subspecialties across the region, including clinical operations, training and research activities, network affiliations, and quality and performance improvement.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

The CAO reports to the Director of the Department of Medicine, the Chief Operating Officer for JHH, and the Vice Dean for Finance and Administration for the SOM, and works collegially and collaboratively with Johns Hopkins Medicine (JHUSOM, JHHS, JHH, JHBMC) senior executives and JHU faculty across the system. This role is a critical leader and advisor to senior leadership in both the Department and JHM as a whole. The CAO also is a key contact for JHM relationships including, but not limited to, compliance, development, finance, human resources, government affairs, internal audits, legal, marketing and communications, Office of Johns Hopkins Physicians, and central core services.

The position directly supervises the SOM Administrator, Director of Finance, Director of Operations – JHH, Director of Ambulatory Operations & Access, Communications Manager, Director of Professional Fee Billing, and Administrative Resident(s). A number of indirect relationships exist.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategic Planning and Program Development

  • Collaborate with DOM leadership to develop a vision for the future and set goals for achieving change. Manage change by building consensus on goals.
  • Manage strategic planning (goal setting, execution, program distribution, and results monitoring) for the department with DOM leaders. Align and simplify goals, ensure stakeholder buy-in and execution for all DOM activities across JHM.
  • Collaborate with the vice chairs, division directors, and division administrators to identify opportunities for new programs that enhance revenue to support the institutional mission.
  • Fiscal Stewardship / Resources

  • Meet agreed upon financial and operational objectives of DOM. Where appropriate, institute corrective actions including audits, reallocating resources, human resource management, reprioritizing, and / or modifying plans or budgets.
  • Overall responsibility for DOM financial performance and management, including forecasting budgets, reporting against metrics and goals inclusive of P&L’s, and overall business planning.
  • Clinical Administration

  • Supervise directors of operations at The Johns Hopkins Hospital and Associate Administrator of Ambulatory Operations. Collaborates with the Medicine administrator at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. Partners on relationship building with hospital leaders, understands disparate cultures, functions to create synergies / collaboration. Aligns goals, communication, meetings, and outcomes.
  • Collaborate with Nursing Administration on financial oversight, staffing, bed management, and quality / safety / service improvement initiatives.
  • Collaborate with the clinical vice chairs to optimize clinical operations and outcomes.
  • Ensures continuity of departmental operations during disruptive events (e.g., inclement weather, facility disruptions, emergency situations, etc.).
  • Research / Education

  • Partner to improve academic functions, including residency support, streamlined grant submissions, faculty recruitment, and facilities.
  • Climate Setting and Leadership

  • Responsible for ensuring oversight of management and structure that will allow for the Department’s complex financial, operational, and support functions to be well-managed and successful by metric measurement at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, National Capital Region, and the Department’s various ambulatory sites across its service area. Supervises and recruits administrative leaders in the DOM in collaboration with the Director and other leaders.
  • EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • Master's degree (JD, MBA, MHA, MPH or another related field) required.
  • Minimum 10 years of progressively responsible administrative, financial, and clinical operations experience in an academic health system required.
  • 5-7 years of management experience (e.g., planning, directing, monitoring, organizing, and controlling monetary and non-monetary resources) in a matrixed academic environment with significant business impact and extensive scope.
  • Demonstrated record of related accomplishments along with strong financial and analytic capabilities.
  • Experience with strategic planning issues, growth strategies, and network and business development in healthcare highly desirable. Exposure to research and clinical trials is preferred.
  • Administrative, management, and supervisory experience. Prior experience in large-scale change management.
  • Considerable knowledge of research, clinical regulations, and trends across national academic and medical centers and healthcare systems.
  • Familiarity with the Maryland healthcare system desirable.
  • A firm understanding of national health care and research trends / impacts, policies, and issues.
  • Salary Range : Minimum $220,000 - Maximum $300,000 incentive. Compensation will be commensurate with equity and experience for roles of similar scope and responsibility.
