SUMMARY:
The Chief Medical Information Officer (CMIO) at Johns Hopkins Hospital (JHH) serves as the primary physician leader for the strategic deployment of health IT systems, including the Epic EHR and other clinical communication technologies. This role focuses on aligning IT systems to meet the needs of clinicians, supporting education and research at the School of Medicine, and ensuring a seamless integration of clinical workflows with innovative technologies.
Key responsibilities include collaborating across the Johns Hopkins Health System (JHHS) to maintain a unified informatics strategy, driving adoption of AI and digital health tools, and enhancing quality, safety, and clinician satisfaction. The CMIO acts as a critical liaison between clinical, operational, and IT teams, overseeing governance, workflow optimization, and compliance with IT security and privacy policies.
Additionally, the CMIO champions education in clinical informatics, promotes effective communication strategies, and monitors the impact of technology to continuously improve clinical operations and return on investment. The position contributes to JHH’s strategic goals, fostering innovation to advance clinical, educational, research, and operational excellence.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
Reports directly to the VPMA of the Johns Hopkins Hospital and the CMIO- JHM and works collaboratively across the enterprise.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Serve as the primary physician leader for the Johns Hopkins Hospital for the strategic deployment of health IT systems. This includes the Epic electronic health record (EHR) and all other clinical and clinical communication systems.
  2. Ensure that the health IT systems at JHH support the vast and complex needs of the practicing clinicians at JHH and support the ongoing educational and clinical research needs of the affiliated School of Medicine and health system.
  3. Collaborate with the JHM CMIO and ACMIO and the CMIOs at the other hospitals in the Johns Hopkins Health System (JHHS) to provide a coherent clinical informatics vision and strategy in close partnership with our Health IT organization.
  4. Serve as a valuable liaison between our clinical and operational leaders and our IT@JH organization. Ensure that our IT organization and their partners and vendors work together to support the needs of JHH clinicians and patients.
  5. Develop strong partnerships with clinicians and support staff across JHH to develop and maintain a deep understanding of clinical workflows and operations, ensuring the effective translation and application of new IT capabilities.
  6. Identify and assess opportunities for innovation and adoption of new technologies that support the organization's clinical, educational, research, and operational goals. Provide expertise and insight into emerging Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital health technologies.
  7. Lead or support key clinical work groups or committees in creating required clinical content, protocols, workflows, governance, and related system usage policies. Identify opportunities to redesign workflows and eliminate low value activities.
  8. Drive efforts in adopting technologies that improve quality, safety, patient experience, clinician satisfaction, and financial performance.
  9. Further develop and implement a comprehensive clinical communication strategy in conjunction with health system IT leadership.
  10. Collaborate with IT security and privacy leadership to ensure JHH clinician compliance with privacy and security policies.
  11. Contribute to the development of organizational and IT strategy and annual plans and budgets for both JHH and JHM.
  12. Develop effective communication strategies and execute on them to keep internal and external partners engaged and aware of the medical informatics strategy and ongoing initiatives.
  13. Monitor the effectiveness of technology use and provider satisfaction in clinical operations, implementing education, workflow changes, and other improvements to optimize technology adoption and achieve returns on our investments.
  14. Support the education of healthcare providers in clinical informatics and information technology to improve clinical efficiency and clinician wellness.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & SKILLS
EDUCATION:

  • Medical degree (MD or DO) from an accredited institution.
  • Eligibility for or current licensure in the State of Maryland required.
  • Board certification in a relevant medical specialty.
  • 10 years of progressively responsible related experience including 5-7 years of management experience with significant business impact. Progressive leadership experience in a complex healthcare setting, academic medical center experience strongly preferred.
  • Advanced training or certification in clinical informatics (e.g., a fellowship or a clinical informatics board certification) strongly preferred.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Proven leadership experience in clinical informatics within a complex healthcare setting.
  • Extensive experience with Epic or other enterprise EHR systems, including implementation, optimization, and governance.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including IT, clinical, and operational leaders.
  • Experience in developing and implementing clinical workflows, protocols, and system usage policies.
  • Familiarity with emerging healthcare technologies, including AI and digital health innovations.
  • Knowledge of privacy, security, and regulatory compliance in healthcare IT.
  • Track record of driving quality improvement, provider satisfaction, and operational efficiency through technology.
  • Experience in teaching or mentoring in clinical informatics is a plus.

SKILLS

  • Understanding of budget and fiscal management requirements. Experience with broad multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Salary Range: Minimum $355,000-Maximum $460,000. Compensation will be commensurate with equity and experience for roles of similar scope and responsibility.
