Position Summary
The Vice President of Facilities Management oversees facilities management operations, clinical engineering, energy services, and engineering and commissioning, across the health system and the School of Medicine, including approximately 1100 represented personnel within the organization with three unions represented. The Vice President will inherit a strong team with deep institutional knowledge and a commitment to supporting the mission of JHHS.
Reporting Relationships
Reporting directly to the Senior Vice President of Facilities, the Vice President of Facilities plays a pivotal part in shaping the future of JHHS' infrastructure and operations.
Responsibilities
All the critical responsibilities outlined below are expected to be carried out in a manner that reflects the mission, vision, and values of the Johns Hopkins Health System. The Vice President of Facilities works in concert with the executive leadership team of the organization to:
Strategic Planning and Alignment

  • Respond to strategic demands, initiate consultative services, and act as the focal point for Facilities departmental objectives.
  • Distill and demonstrate how the clinical, educational, and research goals can be incorporated into project plans and programs.
  • Develop and evaluate multiple strategies, considering future strategic objectives, institutional needs, real estate opportunities, and community development initiatives. Oversee the programming, design, and implementation of space planning and construction for the health system.

Operations and Compliance

  • Continually improve departmental processes and policies, ensuring annual critical reviews for simplicity and effectiveness.
  • Ensure Facilities Department efforts meet best practices, regulatory guidelines, and building codes.
  • Develop and recommend policy modifications in collaboration with Facilities Vice Presidents and Senior Directors.

Staffing and Team Development

  • Develop staffing models that support departmental goals and objectives.
  • Continuously develop personnel through mentoring, coaching, and leading by example.
  • Manage conflicts, develop healthy and productive teams, and inspire and motivate teams to excel.

Budget and Resource Management

  • Establish program parameters, facility requirements, and target values for the capital budget.
  • Manage position responsibilities within defined budgets and adhere to operating budgets for areas of responsibility.

Presentation and Communication

  • Develop, collaborate, edit, and finalize presentations for executive leadership, trustees, and donors, ensuring high-quality communication.
  • Present and support presentations at the highest level of JHHS executives, trustees, and donors.

Risk Management and Innovation

  • Assess and manage risks effectively to protect the organization's interests.
  • Manage innovation and foster a culture of creativity to remain competitive and adapt to change.
  • Recognize the importance of sustainability and social responsibility, integrating these principles into department operations.

Candidate Qualifications
Education/Certification

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering. Graduate level education preferred but not required.
  • Licensed Engineer preferred.

Knowledge and Work Experience

  • 10 years of experience in hospital planning, design, and facilities management within a healthcare environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of strategic facilities development concepts and principles; building design and construction principles, processes, methods, techniques, and standards; sustainable design principles; and strong space planning expertise.
  • Possess a comprehensive understanding of medical facility and laboratory operations and systems.
  • Exceptional Analytical Skills: Demonstrated ability to resolve complex technical issues, analyze diverse requests, and lead operations within large, multifaceted organizations.
  • Healthcare Expertise: Comprehensive understanding of acute care (inpatient, IMC, ICU), ambulatory services, healthcare support operations, and medical research laboratory requirements.
  • Union: successfully led union negotiations, resulting in mutually beneficial agreements that aligned with organizational goals and union expectations.
  • Regulatory and Safety Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of building and healthcare-related safety and regulatory standards, including NFPA Life Safety Code, Building Codes, The Joint Commission, and the Facility Guidelines Institute.
  • Contracting and Construction Proficiency: Proficient in contracting practices and language, with a solid grasp of construction and maintenance terminology and services.
  • Financial Acumen: Strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Personnel Management: Familiarity with personnel policies and procedures.
  • Technical Proficiency: Functional expertise in computer applications (PC- and network-based), including Windows, departmental email, word processing, database management, spreadsheets, project management, presentations, and 3D/CAD software. Additionally, skilled in client-server relational databases for work order and project accounting systems.

Salary Range: Minimum $345,000 - Maximum $430,000. Compensation will be commensurate with equity and experience for roles of similar scope and responsibility.
