Definition & Duties
Under supervision of the Operations Superintendent, perform maintenance, construction, and custodial work of Conservation Board areas including grounds, buildings, and equipment.
Knowledge of & Ability to
- Equipment and vehicle operation and preventative maintenance
- Building and grounds maintenance
- Custodial materials, methods, and equipment used in building and grounds care
- Basic mechanical principles
- Materials such as cleaning products, pesticides, paints, varnishes and lubrication oils
- Policy and procedure manuals dealing with grounds and building maintenance standards, safety standards, mowing equipment maintenance and repair manuals
- Basic construction, carpentry and plumbing
- English language to include basic grammar, sentence structure and vocabulary
Ability to:
- Perform a variety of routine manual tasks in the care, cleaning, and general maintenance of buildings, park facilities, grounds and equipment
- Perform duties at other JCCB buildings and properties as needed
- Operate assigned equipment skillfully, safely and in conformance with regulations
- Operate equipment and tools required on the job (including mowers, tractors, chain saws, snowplow, snow blower, UTV etc.)
- Represent Johnson County and perform duties in a professional, responsible and trustworthy manner

- Establish and maintain effective relationships with co-workers, supervisors and members of the public
- Keep accurate records
- Assist with inventory of cleaning and shop supplies

- Have clarity of speech, hearing and writing which permits effective communication

- Occasionally lift, carry, push and pull up to 100 pounds
- Work outdoors in all types of terrain in all types of weather
- Have sufficient personal mobility to complete field work
- Manage own time and work independently to complete daily duties
- Work flexible schedule and occasional overtime as needed
Minimum Education, Training & Experience & Special Requirements
High school graduate or equivalent AND six (6) months of custodial/maintenance experience or any combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Experience with a municipal or county park system preferred
Special requirements: Valid Class A CDL with Air Brake Endorsement or obtainable within (1)) year and insurable under county liability coverage. Iowa Department of Agriculture Applicator Pesticide Certification or the ability to attain certification within one (1) year of hire. Must pass county background check
Specific Duties
To be performed satisfactorily with or without reasonable accommodation.
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not construed as exclusive or all inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
- Sweep, mop, scrub, strip, wax, and polish floors in hallways, lobbies, offices, and other venues
- Wash sinks, mirrors, shelves, windows, walls, and blinds
- Clean and sanitize restrooms and replace consumable products in restrooms
- Empty wastebaskets and proper disposal of trash and recyclable materials
- Mow grounds according to schedule. Trim, plant and remove trees and shrubs; apply pesticides.
- Perform routine preventative maintenance and repairs for equipment.
- Perform general maintenance and repair of buildings as required.
- Notify supervisor of inventory and maintenance needs
- Perform routine grounds work, including trash pickup, snow removal, etc.
- Maintain and clean public use buildings. Wash walls, clean toilets, perform floor care including cleaning and polishing floors.
- Fix minor plumbing and electrical problems including replacing lights and outlets.
- Recondition park facilities as necessary.
- Paint and stain buildings and other items
- Serve as crew leader as necessary.
- Attend trainings and work related meetings.
- Perform all work activities in accordance with Conservation Board policies, procedures and safety practices.
- Attend work regularly at the designated place and time.
