Summary: 
Under the supervision of the Associate Vice President of Health, Wellness, and Human Services, the Department Chair of Nursing Education Programs takes a leadership role in activities pertaining to student instruction and program enhancement. They have primary responsibility for coordinating the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the courses in the Nursing Program.
  • Directing the Nursing Program based on curriculum designed to assure mobility for individuals who desire educational preparation in nursing.
  • Assuming the authority and responsibility along with the nursing faculty for the development and implementation of the nursing curriculum, for student admission and progression, and for graduation requirements.
  • Coordinate evaluation of all aspects of the Nursing program including curriculum, faculty, students, graduates, facilities, etc.
  • Developing position descriptions for nursing faculty and assist in the recruitment and selection of nursing faculty in accordance with personnel policies of the College.
  • Directing the orientation of new nursing faculty members.
  • Supervising nursing faculty.
  • Assigning nursing faculty for classroom and clinical teaching responsibilities.
  • Coordinating meetings of the nursing faculty.
  • Coordinating and participating in program evaluation and the development, implementation, and evaluation of the annual departmental plan.
  • Coordinating the development, implementation, and evaluation of nursing policies. 
  • Assisting in the recruitment and selection of nursing students.
  • Directing all aspects of the nursing admission committee. 
  • Evaluating transcripts for incoming transfer students and applicants for advanced placement.
  • Serving as general advisor for nursing students.
  • Assuring that all nursing has appropriate liability/malpractice insurance coverage prior to clinical experiences.
  • Oversight in maintaining annual contractual agreements with all clinical agencies.
  • Coordinating membership and meetings of the Nursing Advisory Committee.
  • Assuming teaching assignments in areas of expertise, but not generally in a full-time load capacity.
  • Maintaining student records in accordance with policies of the college and as stipulated by NC Board of Nursing.
  • Preparing and submitting reports to the North Carolina Board of Nursing and other accrediting agencies as required regarding the program, students, and graduates.
  • Performing other duties as assigned by the Associate Vice President of Health, Wellness & Human Services related to special projects as a part of administrative responsibilities.
  • Participating in affairs of the College including recruitment of students, maintenance of the learning environment, student activities, and other duties assigned by the College Administration.
Supervisory Responsibilities:  Supervises nursing faculty.Qualifications:

  • Active unrestricted license to practice as a registered nurse in North Carolina or multistate licensure privilege to practice as a registered nurse in North Carolina.
  • Two years of full-time experience as a faculty member in a Board- approved program.  
  • Nursing leadership /management experience. 
 
Education Minimum:  Master of Science Degree in Nursing.  
 
Education Preferred:  Master of Science Degree in Nursing with a focus in Nursing Education OR Master of Science Degree in Nursing and meet the education requirements for Nurse Educators as outlined by the North Carolina Board of Nursing within the first three years of employment, which includes:  have preparation in teaching and learning principles for adult education, including curriculum development, implementation, and evaluation, appropriate to assignment.    
This preparation may be met by one of the following:
(1)  Completion of 45 contact hours of continuing education courses;
(2)  Completion of a certificate program in nursing education;
(3)  Nine semester hours of graduate course work;
(4)  National certification in nursing education; or
(5)  Documentation of successful completion of structured, individualized development activities of at least 45 contact hours approved by the NC Board of Nursing.  
 
Experience Minimum: Two (2) years of full-time experience as a faculty member in a Board- approved program.  
One to two years’ experience in an academic or nursing leadership experience role. 
 
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
  • Current unrestricted license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of
     North Carolina
  • Health Care Provider CPR – Adult, Infant, Child
Additional Qualifications: (Desired)
  • Professional Liability Insurance
  • Certified Nurse Educator
  • Accreditation process/experience is preferred
Language Skills    
Effective written and verbal communication skills are required.                                           
Mathematical Skills              
Ability to perform basic math computations including adding, subtracting, multiplying and averaging all units of measure. Ability to compute fractions, percentages and decimals.
Reasoning Ability    
Ability to use effective critical thinking, problem solving and decision-making skills.
Computer Skills                                            
To perform this job successfully an individual should be proficient in a Windows environment and have knowledge of email systems, PowerPoint, Blackboard and online lab environments.
