DIRECTOR OF SPECIAL SERVICES
JOB SPECIFICATIONS:
The Director of Special Services is responsible for administering the special education program for the district. The major function of the Director of Special Services is to implement and supervise the Regulation of Disabled Children as approved by the Rhode Island Board of Regents.
QUALIFICATIONS: EXPERIENCE AS A DIRECTOR OF SPECIAL SERVICES REQUIRED
1.A Masters Degree from an institution approved by the Rhode Island Department of Education.
2.At least five years experience as a special education teacher.
3.Certification in the State of Rhode Island as a special education administrator.
4.Demonstrated ability in working with staff, students, parents and the general public.
MAJOR AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY/DUTIES:
1.Coordinates all special education programs in the district.
2.Establishes procedures to process and place eligible students in special education classes in accordance with applicable state and federal statutes and regulations.
3.Implements curriculum and program planning and staff development programs for staff.
4.Keeps Superintendent of Schools informed of state and federal financial aid for special education.
5.Develops budget recommendations and provides expenditure control on established budgets for special education.
6.Evaluates all special education programs, facilities, teachers, curriculum, and materials.
7.Develops required and needed programs for all disabled students through long term planning in accordance with their IEPs.
8.Insure continuity and appropriateness of curriculum for all special education classes.
9.Places disabled children in appropriate educational programs based on the overall evaluation and individual needs.
10.Supervises the referral and evaluation process.
11.Maintains and oversees the confidentiality of all special education records and policies.
12.Maintains a liaison and communication with parent groups, staff members, and community agencies relating to special education.
13.Directs out-of-district placement of special education pupils.
14.Develops all special education state and federal grant applications, reports and statistical data.
15.Implements all state and federal regulations governing the education of disabled children.
16.Works with building principals to effectively and efficiently place and monitor special education students.
17.Evaluates diagnostic staff and assists principals in evaluating their building Special Education staff.
WORK YEAR/SALARY:
1.Two hundred sixty (260) days.
2.Salary to be negotiated with the School Committee.
POSITION IN THE TOTAL ORGANIZATION:
Reports directly to the Superintendent of Schools or his/her designee.
