Johnstone Supply, headquartered in Knoxville, TN, is searching for a Controller in our Birmingham, AL location with experience in Accounting/Payroll with strong business office experience. This person will report to our CFO. A successful candidate should have a detailed understanding of accounting and experience working directly with the business owners. Experience working in a Wholesale environment is a plus.
Johnstone Supply is an HVAC wholesaler operating 13 locations in the Southeastern region of the United States. We are in search of team members to meet the demands of our growing clientele and seek a key member to add to our team. Our preferred candidate should be creative, resourceful, and have an eagerness to work for an established business in a small company atmosphere. They would be committed to accuracy and be able to work independently. They should be very comfortable in a fast-paced environment, a team-oriented player, and accustomed to meeting deadlines.
Responsibilities
- Prepare monthly standard Journal entries and ensure all entries by others are recorded for the month. Reconcile all Main Bank Accounts and General Ledger accounts monthly.

Review monthly financials for reasonableness and facilitate the monthly close in conjunction with the CFO and explaining variances for reporting.
- Accumulate the Fixed Asset information for annual submission to CPA service who maintains Detail fixed Asset Records, Tax/Book Depreciation differences and Depreciation Expense results.
- Maintain the Daily Cash/LOC usage and projection report, making sure all cash amounts are deposited and recorded correctly in the bank and ERP system (Solar Eclipse). Coordinate/track the timely deposits of all branch cash receipts.
- Record monthly credit card fees and track the merchant charges for potential savings and transition to a more cost-effective solution.
- Ability to process monthly and quarterly Sales Tax returns and make payments on the state websites.
- Accumulate and submit payroll information to the Payroll Service who processes the bi-monthly payroll, coordinate and review submission with the CFO. Ensure all hourly changes and commissions are properly included.

Be responsible for the day-to-day management of business office personnel.
- Participate in management of Credit Queue and releasing of orders on hold in conjunction with AR Manager and CFO.
The above is not an exhaustive list of duties and you will be expected to perform different tasks as necessitated by your management team.
Qualifications
- Minimum Bachelor’s Degree, in accounting preferred.
- 5 years of working experience in an Accounting Office setting.
- Strong organizational and analytical skills; dedicated to good customer service.
- Detailed knowledge of recording the Accounting Transactions, in accordance with GAAP.
- Solid organizational and time management skills
- Self-motivated and ability to work both independently and as a lead team member
- Exceptional communication skills and ability to function in a fast-paced business environment
Additional Skills
- Requires working knowledge of financial statements and automated financial software.
- Knowledge of accounting procedures/processes to maintain payroll, accounts payable and receivables.
- Strong knowledge and use of Excel.
Experience:
- Strong Excel User: 5 years (Required)
- Accounting: 5 years (Required)
- Payroll: 2 years (Required)
- Experience with Solar Eclipse (not required, but a plus)
