Summary Description
The Lead Accountant is responsible for overseeing the general accounting functions of the cooperative, ensuring financial accuracy, compliance with regulatory requirements, and efficient financial reporting. This role provides guidance and support to accounting staff and is expected to perform or assist with the duties of the Accountant and Senior Accountant as needed. The Lead Accountant works closely with the Controller to support financial decision-making and maintain the cooperative's fiscal integrity.

Performs other duties that from time to time may be assigned by management and carry out the assigned duties in a courteous and dependable manner with an attitude commensurate with being a member of the employee team of the Cooperative.

Normal working conditions inside office building with heat and air conditioning. Regular office hours are from 8:00am to 5:00pm Monday through Friday, except company observed holidays. The position is in Jacksonville, North Carolina. Should live near or within the community.

Reporting Relationships
- Reports to: Controller
- Directs: None
- Oversee the cooperative's general ledger, ensuring accurate and timely recording of financial transactions.
- Prepare, review, and analyze financial statements to ensure completeness and accuracy.
- Assist with month-end and year-end closing processes, including reconciliations and adjustments.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, cooperative accounting principles, and regulatory requirements.
- Support external audit processes by preparing the required documentation and responding to auditor inquiries.
- Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis as needed.
- Oversee and provide guidance to accounting staff, ensuring smooth workflow and adherence to policies.
- Assist in accounts payable, accounts receivable, and fixed asset accounting as needed.
- Identify opportunities for process improvements and implement best practices to enhance efficiency.
- Provide backup support for the Accountant and Senior Accountant in their absence.
- Assist in special projects and other duties as assigned by the Controller or VP of Accounting and Finance.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities
- This position requires a minimum of a bachelor's degree in accounting or finance from an accredited university.
- The designation of CPA or similar professional designation preferred.
- Three years of relevant industry or public accounting experience.
- Any combination of education and experience that would provide the level of knowledge, ability, and professionalism required will be considered.
- Strong knowledge of accounting principles, financial reporting, and internal controls.
- Familiarity with cooperative accounting, utility accounting, and regulatory requirements preferred.
- Proficiency in accounting software, Microsoft Excel, and financial management systems.
- Ability to analyze financial data and provide insights to management.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with team members and leadership.
- Ability to work independently and adapt to changing priorities.
- Supervisory experience or demonstrated leadership abilities are preferred.
