Joseph’s House is a residential respite care home in NW Washington, DC that serves primarily previously homeless men and women with advanced HIV disease and / or terminal cancer.  For most of these residents, some combination of mental illness, stigma, isolation, substance abuse, poverty and / or domestic violence have prevented them from successfully managing their HIV disease and cancer.

Once medically stabilized, many Joseph’s House residents transition to post residential case management.  These services can include medication management, housing, counseling, life skills training, advocacy, transportation and community activities.

Job Summary :

The Deputy Director at Joseph’s House is a member of a multidisciplinary team including a registered nurse, clinical coordinator, executive director, and staff, who provides comprehensive intake, assessment, discharge planning and case management services to all members of the Joseph’s House Community.  The Deputy Director works directly with the Executive Director, nurses, social worker, staff, residents, community friends, and community partners. The Deputy Director assists the Executive Director in managing and administering the daily operations of Joseph’s House in order to meet the quality of care, financial, and legal, standards expected from residents, government authorities, and private foundations.

Responsibilities :

Program Management and Service Delivery

  • Provide information, advice, and counsel to the Executive Director and management in the planning, development, and operation of Joseph House services
  • Support the organization's daily operations to ensure smooth and efficient functioning
  • Oversee coordination of delivery of other community-based services on behalf of individual residents.
  • Staff Supervision and Development

  • Recruit, train, and supervise staff, ensuring adherence to best practices
  • Oversee activities of multidisciplinary team to ensure cohesiveness of team and efficiency of organizational processes
  • In concert with key staff, assess referrals and welcome new residents. Supervise, support and evaluate social worker, licensed therapist, and addictions counselor Ensure administrative and social work responsibilities are being completed in a timely manner using innovative and compassionate approaches to mitigating barriers
  • Identify staff training needs and create access to educational opportunities to promote evidence-based, trauma-informed care in line  with our program goals. Collaborate with staff and external stakeholders to identify additional opportunities for programmatic innovation and expansion that represent our values of Love, Advocacy, Service, Welcome and Growth. Identify areas for organizational improvement and implement effective processes / plans to move the organization forward
  • Financial and Administrative Oversight

  • Assist with grant applications and funding efforts, while also managing monthly program data entry and reporting
  • Actively engage with stakeholder and participate in community outreach initiatives
  • Conduct and / or participate in staff and community meetings
  • Document all service activities provided to community members for funding purposes
  • Community and Stakeholder Engagement

  • Build rapport and establish trusting respectful relationships with clients and families
  • Participate in evaluating prospective, new, and existing clients based on their needs, barriers, and goals
  • Assist in developing an individualized discharge plan for every resident
  • Develop and regularly update a Service Plan for every community member
  • Address client concerns and goals in real time using effective communication skills with client and nurse case management team
  • Identify appropriate community-based resources for community members (housing, counseling / treatment, employment) and
  • advocate for these resources

    Regulatory Compliance and Safety

  • Maintain records and documentation in accordance with legal standards
  • Ensure adherence to healthcare, licensing, and safety regulations
  • Assist with overseeing risk management and emergency preparedness
  • Strategic Planning and Organizational Growth

  • Support the Executive Director in developing and implementing strategic initiatives.
  • Identify opportunities for program expansion and improvement
  • Required Skills / Abilities :

  • Education and Experience :

  • At least 5 years case management and community outreach experience
  • A background in public health or nursing is preferred
  • A minimum of 2 years working with vulnerable populations to include homelessness, substance use, mental illness, and HIV / AIDS
  • Experience in fundraising, as well as participating in and speaking at meetings and panel discussions
  • Previous experience as Deputy Director a plus.

  • Able to communicate Joseph’s House’ mission to individual donors.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks.
  • Ability to function well in a high-paced and at times stressful environment.
  • Ability to remain calm, de-escalate conflict, and manage stress.
  • Other Requirements :

    Ability to drive a vehicle

    Valid and unrestricted driver’s license

    Proof of vaccination against COVID-19

    Proof of TB testing

    We are seeking candidates who are local to the DC Metro area. This is a hybrid position, requiring a few days in the office each week with some flexibility in scheduling.

    Salary : $88,000 - $100,000
