Position Summary:
The Director of Marketing and Communications is a strategic leadership role responsible for developing and executing comprehensive marketing and communications strategies that advance the organization’s mission, enhance its reputation, and drive philanthropic revenue. This position leads integrated marketing efforts across brand management, annual fund campaigns, digital presence, media relations, and organizational communications while serving as a key member of the Advancement leadership team. Key Responsibilities:
Brand Management & Organizational Voice
- Serve as principal steward of the organization’s brand, ensuring consistency across all channels and touchpoints
- Responsible for oversight of brand guidelines, voice, messaging frameworks, and organizational compliance
- Lead creative direction for major organizational initiatives and campaigns
- Guide the development of compelling narratives that communicate the institution's value proposition and impact
Strategic Leadership & Management
- Lead by action and example to advance a culture of positivity, professionalism, trust, transparency, empathy, and excellence at Joybound
- Develop and execute comprehensive marketing and communications strategies aligned with organizational priorities and advancement goals
- Exhibit leadership skills as an enthusiastic motivator and leader
- Experience in mentoring and developing staff
- Lead, mentor, and manage a team of marketing and communications professionals into a cohesive team, while holding individuals and teams accountable for results
- Serve as a key member of the Advancement leadership team, contributing to overall department strategy and decision-making
- Manage departmental budget and resources effectively
- Build and maintain collaborative relationships with key stakeholders across the organization
- Direct and manage external agencies as required
Annual Fund & Revenue Generation
- Direct strategic planning and execution of annual fund campaigns across direct mail and digital channels
- Oversee development of donor-centric messaging and content strategy to drive giving
- Analyze campaign performance and optimize strategies to increase donor participation and revenue driving ROI
- Leverage data analytics for targeted communications and strategies
- Assess performance of direct mail marketing agencies and make recommendations for best-in-class programs
Digital Strategy & Social Media
- Lead institution-wide social media strategy and content planning
- Ensure effective digital presence across all platforms
- Drive innovation in digital communications and engagement strategies
- Monitor and analyze digital metrics to optimize performance
Public & Media Relations
- In collaboration with the public relations manager, develop and build strategy as well as strengthen and expand media relationships
- Serve as senior communications counsel to organization leadership
- Manage crisis communications and organizational messaging on sensitive issues
Publications & Content
- Lead development of compelling storytelling that advances organizational priorities
- Direct conceptualization and production of high-impact organizational publications
- Oversee editorial calendar and content strategy across all channels
- Ensure quality and consistency of all written materials
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in marketing, communications, journalism, or related field
- 10 years of progressive experience in marketing and communications, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role
- Self-motivated and goal-oriented with ability to remain flexible in a changing environment and quickly adapt to tight deadlines and multiple projects
- Proven track record of developing and executing successful integrated marketing campaigns
- Experience managing and mentoring professional staff
- Strong strategic planning and project management skills
- Excellence in written and verbal communication
- Demonstrated success in brand management and development
- Expert proficiency with online platforms including social media, CMS (WordPress), project management (Asana, Trello), marketing platforms (Engaging Networks, Buffer, etc.), Google products (Analytics, Ads, etc.)
- Experience with fundraising communications and revenue generation
- Proficiency in digital marketing and social media strategy
- Budget management experience
- Affection for animals, concern for their wellbeing, and a willingness to accommodate animals in the workplace
- Pre-employment background check required
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree in relevant field
- Experience in nonprofit or animal wellbeing a plus

Physical Requirements:
- Ability to travel occasionally for conferences and professional development
- Some evening and weekend work required for special events
- Work environment includes constant exposure to animals and animal allergens.

- Kneel, bend, stoop, squat, reach above and below shoulder level, grasp and turn objects, stand, and/or walk frequently and repetitively throughout each shift.

Hours:
Full-time, exempt position requiring a minimum of 40 hours per week, including occasional evening and/or weekend work. Hours and workdays may vary according to the needs of the department.

Salary : $175,000 - $185,000
