Position Overview
The Training and Evaluation Director (TED) is responsible for overseeing the training, program evaluation, and post-service planning supports for Joyful Readers’ AmeriCorps tutors. This includes leading tutor training efforts, building data systems and analyzing program data to drive decision-making, and spearheading Joyful Readers’ tutor-to-teacher pipeline initiative. The TED will work closely with the Literacy Director and Literacy Coaches and report to the organization’s Executive Director.
Anticipated Start Date: Mid July
Salary: $86,000 per year, plus benefits
Location: This position is primarily in-person with some flexibility for remote work.
Position Details
The TED is broadly responsible for ensuring that Joyful Readers AmeriCorps tutors receive high-quality training, that program outcomes are measured and acted upon, and that tutors have opportunities to explore careers in education after their service year. Key responsibilities include:
Training and Professional Development
- Design and oversee the AmeriCorps tutor training curriculum, including pre-service and ongoing training throughout the school year
- Oversee training for two smaller cohorts – Senior AmeriCorps tutors serving in their 2 year and beyond and “mid-year” AmeriCorps tutors who start their service in November or December
- Partner with the Literacy Director, Coaches and staff at large, who will work as a team to deliver trainings that are aligned to program needs and effective instructional practices
- Coordinate logistics for training sessions including materials preparation, internal communications, and contracting with external facilitators, volunteers, and space vendors
- Regularly assess the effectiveness of training programs and make adjustments as needed
Program Evaluation and Data Use
- Lead the collection, analysis, and reporting of key program data, including program dosage and implementation, student performance, and overall program impact
- Oversee survey implementation (tutor, service partner, others as needed); review survey data to improve program outcomes
- Work with the Literacy Director and Literacy Coaches to ensure data-driven instructional decisions
- Develop and implement processes for monitoring and improving tutoring effectiveness
- Liaise with 3 party evaluation research firm(s)
- Collaborate with the Development and Program Operations teams to support grant reporting and organizational evaluation efforts
Tutor-to-Teacher Pipeline and Post-Service Planning
- Develop and oversee Joyful Readers’ tutor-to-teacher pipeline initiative, providing pathways for AmeriCorps tutors to pursue careers in education
- Establish and steward partnerships with teacher preparation programs and alternative certification pathways to support tutors interested in becoming educators
- Organize professional development opportunities, career panels, and networking events to help tutors plan their post-service careers
- Provide individualized support and mentorship for tutors exploring education careers
Organizational Leadership and Collaboration
- Serve as a key member of Joyful Readers’ leadership team, contributing to strategic planning and organizational growth
- Support AmeriCorps tutors and staff in understanding and complying with AmeriCorps policies
- Assist with tutor recruitment and interviewing processes
- Participate in school visits, special events, and stakeholder engagement efforts

Position Qualifications
- A passion for ensuring students can read on grade level
- At least 7 years of experience in education, program evaluation, and/or training and development roles
- Experience designing and delivering professional development to diverse groups of educators
- Knowledge of structured literacy (science of reading) and evidence-based instructional practices; experience with Wilson Fundations preferred
- Experience with data analysis and program evaluation, with proficiency in Microsoft Excel
- Familiarity with nationally normed reading assessments such as STAR or MAP
- Experience working with diverse communities, particularly majority Black and/or Latinx populations
- A commitment to supporting early-career educators and fostering professional growth
- AmeriCorps experience a plus
- Spanish-language fluency and/or familiarity with African-American English (AAE) a plus
