Manufacturing Engineer
Position Purpose
Perform a variety of manufacturing and industrial engineering duties to ensure the integrity of operational time standards, useof the most efficient and cost effective manufacturing processes for all products, research and recommend new operationaltechnologies, and continuously improve the safety of the work environment. In addition, under direction of the Director ofOperations, drive operational excellence through the use of Lean manufacturing techniques.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Review existing processes and equipment used for production at the assigned plant. Complete reviews as assigned,recommend appropriate changes and coordinate incorporation of new or altered procedures which make optimum use ofmachines, tooling, equipment and facilities, to achieve more efficient and cost effective processes while maintaining orenhancing quality standards of all products. Work with product engineering personnel to initiate or incorporate designchanges on assigned products which will make better use of equipment and processes or enhance the quality of the product.
Develop, maintain and ensure accuracy of operational time standards and related substantiating data for all assignedproducts and processes, including machine operations, welding, assembly and packing. Perform time observations andcalculate labor rates and standard costs based on these studies. Establish and maintain operational data, such as standardwork combination sheets, text or visual work instructions, and cost information. Review, update and maintain existing routerson assigned products to assure labor accuracy for operational numbers, part descriptions, standard hours, work centerassignments, operations sequences, multipliers, and number of employees for a job. Working with plant supervision,coordinate changes to all manufacturing data as a result of Kaizens and other improvements with appropriate engineeringand financial personnel.
As assigned by the Director of Operations, work with design engineers to determine, before fabrication begins, whether newdesigns or engineering revisions to current designs are compatible with existing processes and equipment. If they are not,determine how equipment, tooling, or processes must be changed in order to manufacture that design. In cooperation withthe Director of Operations and Purchasing, solicit quotations, evaluate proposals and interface with tooling or equipmentmanufacturers as required. Or, as appropriate, make recommendations as to how the design might be amended to utilizeexisting equipment or processes. With the Supply Chain Manager , determine whether new components should be fabricatedin-house or purchased. In the case of purchased parts, work with vendors to ensure that parts are compatible with ourequipment and processes. Ensure that labor standards for new products reflect actual processes, and that costs areaccurate for the product. Together with the Director of Operations, interface with sales department personnel to determinewhether any proposed changes in processes and / or equipment will affect our ability to sell or market the product. Work withengineering on testing any assigned new products.
As assigned, administer the calibration and preventive maintenance programs for specified plant, running and distributingschedules, and inputting all data into the system each month.
As assigned, process "Easy Specials" for production.
Work with plant supervisory personnel to train factory personnel in any new processes or changes to existing processes.Participate in resolution of product quality issues, and assist manufacturing personnel in resolving process problems,equipment or tooling issues.
Perform other related duties as assigned or warranted by conditions.
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
Detail oriented.
Sound problem solving ability and engineering fundamentals.
Ability to effectively resolve shop construction questions providing guidance to resolve the problem in such a manner toprevent similar future questions.
Knowledge of manufacturing processes : structural fabrication (welding, forming, machining etc.)
Highly driven, self-motivated, and able to work under pressure with minimal supervision
The ability to work effectively in a team, and comfortable with the continuous improvement found in a Lean Managementenvironment
Ability to train hourly workers in new processes, or changes in existing processes.
Ability to interface effectively with hourly workers and operations management personnel.
Excellent people skills and professional demeanor; The ability to train, motivate others and to interact effectively with otherswithin the plant and office and outside the facility.
Ability to simultaneously manage multiple, competing, priorities daily.
Energetic and friendly with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Qualifications / Prior Experience
Degree : BS Manufacturing / Industrial Engineering
Recent graduate to 5 years of experience as a manufacturing or industrial engineer operating in a Lean manufacturing environment
Work Environment / Other Requirements
Ability to safely move around the production floor.
Ability to bend, squat and crawl to inspect work in process.
Must be able to use normal office equipment (scanner, printer, copier, computer)
Ability to talk / hear / sit for prolonged periods of time.
The work performed is conducted in a facility with moderate noise levels that are within OSHA limits
