Just Transition Northwest Indiana (JTNWI) is a grassroots environmental justice nonprofit organization. Our mission centers on a just transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy within the Northwest Indiana region, home to one of the most biodiverse ecosystems, the Indiana Dunes National Park, and one of the largest freshwater bodies on the planet, the Great Lakes. JTNWI’s mission is to educate and organize Northwest Indiana communities and workers, give voice to our shared stories, and support a just transition to a regenerative economy that protects the environment, climate, and future generations.
Position Summary:
The JTNWI Development Director is responsible for increasing and diversifying JTNWI’s funding resources and donor engagement. This role collaborates closely with the Executive Director, the Organizing Director, the Policy and Press Director, and the Board of Directors to accomplish the organization's goals.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead in the creation and implementation of a funding development plan
- Build JTNWI’s portfolio of member donors, identify new donor prospects, and manage the fundraising strategy for these donors with the primary responsibility for cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship, leveraging personal relationships and networks
- Identify, write, and track grant proposals, ensuring proper reporting and compliance with grant requirements in close collaboration with the Executive Director and bookkeeper
- Lead in the planning, coordination, and execution of fundraising events and activities
- Create print and digital fundraising appeals and communications
- Implement and maintain a sustained donors campaign
- Steward relationships with values-aligned small businesses to facilitate sponsorships and donations
- Manage the donor database in the EveryAction CRM to effectively track donors and assess donor trends and analytics
- Ability to travel within and outside Northwest Indiana for fundraising opportunities
- Train and support JTNWI staff, Board of Directors, and members in fundraising activities
- Perform other duties as assigned
Administrative
- Participate in weekly all-staff meetings and individual meetings with the Executive Director, completing a check-in document, and prepare progress updates for staff and board meetings
- Work with the Executive Director to manage a fundraising budget
- Coordinate with staff in-person and virtually, including through JTNWI’s Slack channel and email, and attend all required trainings
- Timely completion of data entry and administrative tasks, including timesheets and submitting receipts
Requirements:
- At least 2-3 years of professional experience within the development and fundraising fields
- At least 1 year of professional or volunteer experience working with community-based social and/or environmental justice-related organizations
- Experience in identifying, authoring, and securing successful grants and individual donor gifts
- Strong relationship-building, event-planning, and project-management skills
- Attention to detail, including excellent proofreading and editing skills
- Ability to translate complex environmental issues into talking points suitable for public consumption
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with an ability to connect with diverse audiences and community members
- Experience with design software, such as Adobe and Canva
- Proficient in using a computer, Google Suite (e.g., Gmail and Google Drive, Docs, Sheets, and Forms, and the ability to maintain databases
- Ability to engage in public speaking within the scope of the role
- Must live in or near the Northwest Indiana region (including Lake, Porter, LaPorte, Jasper, and Newton Counties) or be willing to relocate to the region
- Has a driver’s license and reliable transportation, with ability to travel across the region
- Ability to work nights and weekends; standard hours are Monday-Friday, from 9 AM-5 PM CST, but work hours can shift if attendance is required outside of regular business days and hours for scheduled JTNWI activities
- Commitment to clearly and successfully articulating the mission of JTNWI to the public and prospective donors
- Commitment to environmental and climate justice and the Jemez Principles for Democratic Organizing
- Strong ability to effectively and respectfully communicate, collaborate, and connect with people of diverse backgrounds, identities, and experiences
Compensation and Benefits:
- Hours: Full-time, salaried, exempt (40 hours per week)
- Compensation: $67,000-75,000, dependent on qualifications and experience
