JWCH Institute, Inc. is a non-profit Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) with a mission to provide comprehensive health care to low-income and homeless people in the County of Los Angeles.
For many people, gaining access to dental care isn’t simply a matter of finding the nearest dentist. Some may face language and cultural issues that keep them from connecting with dental providers. Others may lack insurance coverage, transportation or childcare that would make it easier for them to visit the dentist. JWCH works to assist patients with navigating barriers and helping them achieve better oral health and improved overall health outcomes.
Position Purpose:
The Dentist is responsible for providing preventive and general dental care aligned with the dentist’s training and experience in a community health clinic setting.
Principal Clinical Responsibilities:
- Examine patients requesting care, diagnose their dental conditions, prescribe and perform appropriate dental treatments, direct others in providing care, or refer patients for specialty consultations or treatments following approved clinical protocols and guidelines.
- Document patient-dentist interactions in the patient’s dental record to ensure accurate and complete reflection of the visit, including diagnoses, treatments, and referrals. Complete required referrals, records, and paperwork as mandated by the organization.
- Educate patients on oral health and its relationship to overall health while promoting oral disease prevention.
- Travel as needed to meet operational demands, including providing services on the Mobile Dental Unit when necessary.
- Perform other related tasks as assigned by the Chief Dental Officer, Associate Dental Director, or Lead Dentist to achieve organizational goals and program objectives.
- Maintain and update professional skills and knowledge through continuing education courses and other educational resources.
- Ensure personal and professional compliance with all applicable federal, state, local, and clinic regulations, protocols, and procedures governing dental practice, clinical care, workplace safety, public health, and confidentiality.
- Demonstrate thorough knowledge of infection and exposure control practices, including sterile techniques for dental procedures.
- Adhere to Dental Department compliance standards regarding infection and exposure control, safety regulations, departmental directives, and clinic policies.
- Collaborate effectively with support staff, providing clear expectations and guidance.
- Work with the Lead Dentist and Dental Manager to achieve efficiency, satisfaction, and productivity goals.
- Follow JWCH Dental Quality protocols, including maintaining an 85% documentation compliance rate and using required smart codes to ensure accurate data integrity. Participate in PDSAs (Quality Improvement Tools) to achieve Dental Quality Measure goals.
- Comply with DHSP (LA County Department of HIV and STD Programs) requirements for patients diagnosed with HIV.
- Understand the Medi-Cal Dental Manual of Criteria, including covered and non-covered services.
- Maintain a general understanding of dental insurance plans, such as HMOs and PPOs.
- Be familiar with Current Dental Terminology (CDT) codes and ICD-10 diagnosis codes relevant to dental diseases.
- Follow Dental Department protocols regarding medical consultations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
- Graduated from an accredited dental school.
- Valid and current California Dental License.
- Current DEA Certificate.
- Current CPR Certification.
- Ability to travel between sites as needed.
- Experience working with clients and staff from diverse socio-economic, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds.
- Preferred experience with NextGen/EDR or Dentrix.

Note: If you become a JWCH provider, you may be able to participate in Loan Repayment Program. A majority of our clinics are NHSC approved sites. The National Health Service Corp may be accepting applications Loan Repayment Program awards. The program is open to licensed primary care medical, dental, and mental and behavior health providers who are employed or have accepted an offer of employment at an NHSC-approved site. Awardees receive up to $50,000 in exchange for two years of service if they practice in a HPSA of 14 above (Tier I). Awardees can also receive up to $30,0000 in exchange for two years of service if they practice in a HPSA of 13 and below (Tier II). You will need to contact National Health Service Corp to apply and receive more information. Upon acceptance, you are encouraged to apply to National Health Service Corp for Loan Repayment Program.
