Position Purpose:
The Medical Assistant (MA) at Crocker Care Campus plays a crucial role in delivering compassionate, patient-centered care to people experiencing homelessness and those who use drugs. This role is embedded in a harm reduction and low-barrier healthcare setting, where flexibility, trust-building, and non-judgmental care are essential.
The MA will work in non-traditional clinical environments, including drop-in spaces, outdoor park-lets, and outreach settings, assisting with clinical tasks, patient hygiene, harm reduction support, and care coordination. This position requires a passion for working with underserved communities and the ability to provide care in a trauma-informed and culturally responsive manner.
About the Crocker Care Campus & Harm Reduction Model:
The Crocker Care Campus is a patient-centered space designed as a welcoming drop-in site for people who use drugs and those experiencing homelessness. It provides a safe, accessible environment focused on hospitality, community, and comprehensive care. Unlike traditional clinics, Crocker operates with flexibility, prioritizing low-barrier engagement and participant autonomy over rigid structures.
Principal Responsibilities:
- Provide patient-centered support in a non-traditional healthcare setting, ensuring accessibility and dignity in care delivery.
- Assist with patient intake, vital signs, and basic medical history, maintaining flexibility based on patient needs.
- Perform phlebotomy, including for patients with challenging venous access.
- Support patients with routine hygiene needs, such as changing clothes and basic wound cleaning.
- Engage in harm reduction practices, including distributing safe-use supplies, overdose prevention education, and connecting patients to social services.
- Assist with rooming patients and setting up exam areas, ensuring a welcoming and safe space.
- Maintain accurate documentation of clinical encounters and services provided.
- Collaborate closely with an interdisciplinary team, including nurses, providers, case managers, and harm reduction specialists, to ensure coordinated, holistic care.
- Support mobile and outreach efforts, bringing care to patients where they are.
- Provide culturally sensitive, trauma-informed interactions, reducing barriers to care for vulnerable populations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant school with a current MA certificate
- Verification of appropriate hours in approved Medical Assistant course to perform venipuncture
- Current BLS certificate from the American Heart Association
- Phlebotomy certification preferred (or willingness to train in phlebotomy for challenging venous access patients).
- Minimum of one (1) year of experience in a clinical setting, community health experience preferred.
- Comfort working in non-traditional clinical spaces, such as outdoor park-lets, drop-in centers, and mobile units.
- Understanding of primary care considerations for individuals experiencing homelessness, substance use, sex work, and incarceration histories.
- Ability to maintain flexibility in all tasks, including vital signs, patient rooming, hygiene assistance, and patient-centered care coordination.
- Passion for providing non-judgmental, harm reduction-focused care.
- Strong teamwork and communication skills, with the ability to work closely with a diverse, interdisciplinary team.
- Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred but not required.
Preferred Experience & Skills:
- Experience in harm reduction or working with people experiencing homelessness.
- Knowledge of trauma-informed care and de-escalation techniques.
- Ability to adapt and provide care in high-need, fast-changing environments.
