Position Description:
Under the supervision of the Clinic Administrator/Supervisor, the Medical Assistant supports both Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners and Primary Care Providers in delivering comprehensive patient care. This role includes assisting with mental health services, medication management, routine clinical procedures, and administrative tasks within the scope of practice. The Medical Assistant plays a vital role in ensuring a smooth and efficient patient experience while maintaining compliance with clinic policies and procedures.
Principal Responsibilities:
Psychiatric Support:
- Assist Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners with routine patient care tasks, following clinic policies and regulatory guidelines.
- Collect and document patient vitals, including height, weight, BMI, temperature, pulse, respiration rate, and blood pressure.
- Perform screening assessments to assist in evaluating patients' mental health status.
- Administer prescribed medications per provider orders and after verification by licensed healthcare personnel.
- Assist with medication management, including tracking refills, coordinating prior authorizations, and educating patients on prescribed medications.
- Provide patient education on mental health conditions, medication adherence, and coping strategies under the direction of the provider.
- Ensure timely scheduling of psychiatric evaluations and follow-up appointments.
- Utilize trauma-informed care and de-escalation techniques when assisting patients in acute distress.
- Work collaboratively with behavioral health teams, including psychiatrists, case managers, and social workers, to support a holistic approach to patient care.
Primary Care Support:
- Perform routine clinical procedures, such as venipuncture, PPD skin placement, wound care, and medication administration, under provider direction.
- Collect lab specimens and assist with diagnostic testing as needed.
- Assist in administering immunizations and other medications per provider orders.
- Provide basic health education and self-care instructions to patients based on provider recommendations.
- Schedule routine and follow-up appointments and coordinate patient care across departments.
- Maintain clean, stocked, and organized exam rooms to ensure a safe clinical environment.
- Document patient interactions accurately in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) system, ensuring compliance with confidentiality policies.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives, case conferences, and training sessions to enhance skills and knowledge.
- Uphold clinic safety protocols and participate in emergency response procedures as needed.
Requirements:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant school with a current MA certificate
- Verification of appropriate hours in approved Medical Assistant course to perform venipuncture
- Current BLS certificate from the American Heart Association
- At least two years of experience in a healthcare setting, preferably in behavioral health, psychiatry, or primary care preferred.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to support patients dealing with chronic conditions, mental health disorders, and preventative care needs.
- Proficiency in Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems and basic administrative tasks.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
