Kennel Attendant

Job Summary
With a caring heart for the mission, provide compassionate care to shelter animals, maintaining a clean and sanitary environment according to cleaning procedures.

Typical Job Responsibilities

Animal care

Treat all animals with kindness and respect

• Follow a regular schedule to clean and sanitize cat enclosures, surgery and related areas, including litter boxes, according to the procedures using material (cleaning compounds) and equipment (broom, mop, hot water hose, foaming device, etc.) with skill and efficiency.
• Feed and water cats, and other animals as needed, according to schedule and track activities for each animal.
• Ability and willingness to learn and give medications and injections to animals.
• Assist staff with restraining or lifting animals and administering medications as needed.
• Recognize and report any unusual condition or abnormal animal behavior to supervisor.
• Identify animal enclosure maintenance needs and notify supervisor.

Other

• Serve as a liaison during shelter hours, assisting guests with questions they have about the shelter animals.
• Regular and predictable attendance is required.
• Wear safe and appropriate clothing.
• Report any injury or incidents to supervisor or Executive Director immediately, including but not limited to scratches, bites, or strains resulting from job responsibilities.
• Report building and other safety concerns.
• Work positively and collaboratively with the team, supporting each other to fulfill KAR’s mission.
• Model professional, ethical and responsible behavior, providing excellent customer service at all times.
• Maintain confidentiality of all information and follow all KAR policies and procedures.
• Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor or the Executive Director.

Education and Experience Requirements

• A High school diploma or equivalent is preferred.
• At least 1 year of experience handling and caring for animals is required with knowledge of basic animal handling and restraint techniques.

Skills and other Competencies

• A heart for the mission and genuinely enjoys working with animals and is able to deal with them even when they are stressed or ill.
• Ability to follow oral and written directions and to communicate effectively.
• Ability to provide excellent customer service.
• Take initiative, be organized, and flexible to adapt to KAR’s changing needs.
• Ability to work effectively independently and collaboratively with the team.

Other Requirements

• Must be at least 18 years old
• Must pass background check.
• Must have reliable transportation.

• Ability to lift, carry, and restrain animals, and carry large bags of animal food.
• Ability to walk or stand for extended periods of time, climb a step ladder and into a cage for cleaning.
• Ability to use cleaning compounds and equipment.
• Ability to communicate effectively in English.

Working conditions: May be exposed to unpleasant odors, noises and animal feces. May be exposed to bites, scratches and contagious diseases.
