Position: Middle School Academic Support Teacher
FTE: Part-time to Full-time Teacher
Reports to: Middle School Principal
Location : Kalamazoo Christian K8 Campus (3800 S. 12th Street)
Position Summary
The Academic Support teacher will provide support to middle school students in reading and math (5th - 8th grade), focused on meeting the needs of students who would benefit from more intensive support.
The preferred candidate will be able to demonstrate a strong & active Christian faith with a solid knowledge of the Bible. The preferred candidate will understand & be committed to the mission & vision of Christian education.
Responsibilities and Essential Functions (including but not limited to)
- Reading and math intervention - work with students who need intensive instruction in reading to equip with skills to be successful in middle school and beyond (5th - 8th grade)
- Work in conjunction with the other academic support staff and classroom teachers to provide cohesive support from grade to grade, identify students who need support, and coordinate learning plans with classroom curriculum and testing
- Demonstrate flexibility and on-going communication when working with students, parents, and colleagues
- Coordínate and communicate with staff from Kalamazoo Public Schools who provide services to students with service plans and ensure services are being provided
- Write 504 plans
- Provide and implement progress monitoring of students
Necessary Skills & Qualifications
- Knowledge of formative and summative assessments
- Knowledge of developmentally appropriate skills for reading and math
- Provide small group instruction
- Awareness of dyslexia and other diagnoses that affect learning
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in education, K-8 or 6-12
- Michigan teaching certificate
- Emphasis in - Reading Support, Math Endorsement
- Special Education Degree preferred
