GENERAL SUMMARY
The purpose of this job is to screen domestic motions filed with the Court to determine initial Court action based on predetermined criteria. It determines eligibility for alternative processes or referral to community agencies. Conducts conciliation inquiries using mediation techniques with parents requesting action on child custody, parenting time, child support and change of domicile to increase efficient use of judicial assets and resolve presenting issues. Draft consent orders regarding resolved issues and child support orders for parents without legal representation.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Reconciles inquiries via mediation with parents on eligible domestic cases, potentially submitting draft agreements between parents for issuance of binding by the Court.
- Screens domestic motions based upon set criteria for initial Court action; recommends level of Court involvement or potential referral to community-based agencies.
- Develops, implements, and recommends improvements to department policies and procedures to effectively collaborate with other Court departments.
- Completes paperwork and related data entry for all activities, decisions, and monthly reports.
- Attends and participates in court proceedings.
- Collaborates with community organizations to develop programs to address domestic concerns and coordinate support services.
- Performs related work as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Required Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, Family Studies, or a related field
- 3 to 5 years of related work experience in social work or client counseling
- Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge, and abilities.
Required Licenses or Certifications
- Certified Judicial Institute Juvenile Probation Officer in the State of Michigan within 2 years of hire.
- Mediation Training within 2 years of hire.
- Certified in Fundamentals of Substance Abuse Counseling within 2 years of hire.
