Job Summary
Under general supervision of the Delivery Services Supervisor, processes outgoing mail; receives and sorts incoming mail; packs and readies items for shipment; and acts as departmental supply person. The Delivery Services Assistant answers the delivery door and notifies appropriate staff when deliveries arrive and assists in arranging items in the storage area. Pulls items for patron holds, processes returned materials and receives incoming materials using an Automated Materials Handling (AMH) machine, shelves materials, assists in managing missing lists, and shelving and shifting projects.
Job Duties
Essential Functions
- Processes, stamps and packs outgoing mail.
- Receives and sorts incoming mail; delivering it to appropriate mail boxes or delivery bins.
- Packs and labels outgoing UPS and FedEx packages.
- Packs and readies ILL materials for shipment through mail & UPS, using an automated mail machine.
- Tracks departmental office supplies and orders when needed; creates requisitions and processes invoices when items received.
- Pulls items from POSH list; processes holds using the AMH.
- Discharges and receives returned and incoming materials.
- Sorts and accurately shelves materials.
- Reads shelves for proper order of materials; keeping shelves and area neat and orderly; shifting when necessary.
- Searches for missing & in-transit items.
- Interacts with library staff & patrons with respect, honesty and willingness to serve.
- Seeks opportunities to expand knowledge of library procedures.
Secondary Functions
- Acts as back up for other customer service desks.
- Acts as backup for holds shelf maintenance.
- Demonstrates moderate computer skills; willingness to expand knowledge.
- Ability to learn AMH processes and troubleshoot issues, using proper safety regulations.
- Communicates well with email and on phone.
- Other tasks as assigned by supervisor.
Requirements
Physical Requirements
- Able to move book trucks up 100 lbs.
- Able to lift 50 lbs.
- Able to bend, lift and shelve on low and high shelves.
- Able to perform job requirements in busy, noisy environments, and tight spaces.
Required Education and Experience
- High School diploma or G.E.D. plus 2 years post-secondary education. This requirement may also be an equivalent combination of education, work experience, and life experience.
- Ability to speak and understand English is required, additional consideration will be given to individuals that are proficient in any non-English languages spoken in Jackson County, MO including Spanish, Vietnamese, French, Arabic, and Swahili.
Work Environment
Work is performed at the Central Library Branch. Workspace is shared with co-workers and patrons from a diverse socio-economic community.
