Description
The English Language Acquisition (ELA) Instructor teaches multiple weekly English classes to those interested in improving English language skills. Programs including, but not limited to, English Basics, Conversation Club, English for Vocational Trades, Financial Literacy, and English for Citizenship. In these classes, the instructor connects with students personally and encourages them in their journey to learning American English.
This is a full-time non-exempt position with an hourly pay of $20.05, plus excellent benefits. Position is open until filled.
Job Duties (Essential Functions)
- Coordinates with manager and curriculum specialist to update and enhance patron experience.
- Maintains program records and produces monthly reports on activities, accomplishments and challenges including program statistics, narratives, and outcomes.
- Models English communication for the purpose of developing student ability to communicate effectively in the English language;
- Provides feedback to students regarding progress towards objectives, expectations, and/or goals.
- Improves overall quality of student outcomes.
- Represents RISE and the Library at events, including but not limited to health, school and community events.
- Instructs and facilitates use of library resources for English Language Acquisition learners.
- Keeps current through trainings, workshops, webinars, and outreach.
- Communicates in-person, email, or phone including text with coworkers and RISE Outreach Manager.
- Performs other related work and undertakes special projects as assigned by supervisor.
- Responsible for recording attendance and reporting this to the RISE Outreach Manager.
- Holds classes at a variety of locations and at various times of the day.
Requirements
- Experience with literacy coaching, language learning, or tutoring experience highly preferred.
- TEFL or TESOL - Currently pursuing or already certified.
- Must have good classroom management skills.
- Must be able to work with and accommodate students of different skill levels at once.
- Experience working with non-native English-speaking persons.
- Experience with volunteer management.
- Must have a desire and ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
- Must be patient, kind, and passionate about helping people improve English skills.
- Ability to speak and understand English is required, additional consideration will be given to individuals that are proficient in any non-English languages spoken in Jackson County, MO including Spanish, Vietnamese, French, Arabic, and Swahili.
Required Education and Experience
- Must have good classroom management experience.
- TEFL, TESOL, CELTA or related certification - Currently pursuing or already certified.
- Must have experience working with non-native English-speaking persons.
Work Environment
Work is performed at the North-East library or partner sites throughout the district. Primary workspace is shared with co-workers in an office environment, other work will be performed in a public space amongst staff and patrons from a diverse socio-economic community.
