Job Title: Director of Information Technology

Reports To: Chief Technology Officer

Salary Grade: S693 ($88,972 - up to budget max)

Department: Information Technology

FLSA Status: Exempt

Position Summary:

The Director of Information Technology provides strategic leadership for the development, implementation, security, and continuous improvement of the district’s technology infrastructure. This role ensures that K-12-specific technology solutions effectively support teaching, learning, and operational efficiency across all school sites. The Director leads efforts to enhance digital equity, implement data-driven instructional tools, and maintain secure, high-performing networks that meet the needs of students, teachers, and staff.

What You’ll Be Doing: (Responsibilities)

Technology Strategy & Implementation

  • Develop and implement a district-wide technology vision aligned with K-12 instructional and operational goals.
  • Lead short-term and long-range planning for infrastructure upgrades, cybersecurity measures, and digital learning tools.
  • Manage district-wide technology initiatives, including 1:1 student device programs, smart classroom technologies, and instructional software.
  • Ensure high-speed, reliable internet access in all buildings to support online learning platforms, assessments, and administrative functions.

Educational Technology & Digital Equity

  • Collaborate with the Director of Instructional Technology to integrate educational technology into classroom instruction effectively.
  • Support data-driven decision-making by implementing and maintaining student information systems, learning management systems (LMS), and assessment platforms.
  • Oversee technology programs that ensure digital accessibility and equitable access to devices, internet, and assistive technology for all students.

Cybersecurity & Data Protection

  • Manage district-wide IT security measures, including firewalls, data encryption, and cybersecurity training for staff.
  • Ensure compliance with FERPA, COPPA, and other student data privacy regulations.
  • Develop protocols to prevent cyber threats, phishing attacks, and unauthorized access to district systems.

Infrastructure & Network Operations

  • Direct and oversee cloud-based services, server management, and software solutions that enhance K-12 administrative and instructional needs.
  • Maintain district-wide telephone, intercom, and emergency alert systems for seamless communication.
  • Monitor and optimize building automation systems to ensure efficiency in technology-driven facilities operations.

Stakeholder Collaboration & Communication

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for school administrators, teachers, and support staff regarding IT needs.
  • Work with curriculum and instruction teams to align technology investments with student learning outcomes.
  • Provide website and digital communication support to ensure accessible and effective district messaging.
  • Prepare and present reports on technology performance, security updates, and budget recommendations to district leadership and the Board of Directors.

Budget & Resource Management

  • Oversee the IT budget, ensuring efficient use of funds for hardware, software, cybersecurity, and training.
  • Lead efforts to secure technology funding through grants, E-Rate programs, and other external funding sources.
  • Manage vendor relationships and evaluate contracts for hardware, software, cloud services, and IT support.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Directly oversee and evaluate the district’s IT staff, including network engineers, help desk personnel, and instructional technology specialists.
  • Lead professional development for IT personnel to ensure up-to-date knowledge of emerging K-12 technology trends.

To Be Successful at This Job, You’ll Need: (Minimum Qualifications)

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Educational Technology, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Five (5) or more years of senior-level management experience in IT leadership, preferably in a K-12 school district.
  • Direct experience with enterprise network systems, cybersecurity, student information systems (SIS), and learning management systems (LMS).
  • Strong background in technology integration in K-12 education, including device management, digital equity, and cloud-based educational platforms.
  • Experience leading data governance, compliance with student data privacy laws, and IT security protocols.
  • Training or experience in data-driven decision-making and IT project management.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, speak, and hear for extended periods.
  • Use of hands and fingers for typing and handling technology-related equipment.
  • Occasional lifting of up to 10-20 pounds for IT equipment setup.
