Job Description:
Kansas City University College of Dental Medicine seeks a Sterilization Technician/Dental Assistant for the dental school in Joplin, Missouri. The qualified Dental Assistant will be responsible for general clinic dental assisting and maintenance and support of the clinical faculty with a focus on student and patient care support within the group practices including dispensing, sterilization, radiography, quality assurance and chairside dental assisting.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Prepare, decontaminate, sanitize, and sterilize dental instruments and supplies for use in clinical procedures
- Inspect instruments post-operatively for proper function and damage, ensuring they are in optimal condition before restocking
- Maintain accurate records of sterilized items, including item numbers, dates, times, sterilizer used, and operator initials
- Monitor sterilization process for instruments or equipment use during procedures
- Ensure all necessary equipment is available and operational as needed
- Validate the sterility of processed instruments by performing biological and chemical testing
- Conduct regular maintenance on autoclaves to ensure proper functioning and safety standards
- Operate steam sterilizers, washer-disinfectors, ultrasonic cleaners, dry heat ovens, and other
- related equipment
- Provide guidance and instructions to new staff members regarding sterile processing
- Monitor inventory levels of supplies in order to maintain adequate stock at all times
Other duties as necessary including but not limited to:
- Assist faculty, students, and patients by performing chairside dental assisting tasks during clinical procedures, as needed
- Prepare treatment rooms by setting up and breaking down equipment, following proper infection control protocols
- Provide patient care support, including taking digital radiographs, organizing patient records, and assisting with dental procedures
- Dispense and maintain dental instruments, supplies, and equipment in the OHC Dispensary and Simulation Clinic using scanning and computer technology
- Assist during medical emergencies and provide necessary support as required
Requirements
- Certificate of completion from an accredited Dental Assisting Program or at least three years of direct experience
- A minimum of two years’ experience as a Sterilization Professional
- Minimum of two years’ experience in sterilization and infection control practices
- Expanded duty functions and certification are preferred
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and contribute to an efficient, productive clinic operation.
- Professional demeanor with a focus on providing exceptional patient care and supporting the educational mission of the clinic
- Knowledge and competence in using electronic technologies for patient charting, imaging, and records management.
