Health Physicist Lead – X-ray & Mammography Section
Join the Kansas Radiation Control Program as a Lead Health Physicist, where your expertise will directly impact public health and safety through the inspection and oversight of X-ray and mammography machines. In this key role, you’ll serve as a non-supervisory team lead, guiding the X-Ray and mammography section employees.
What You’ll Do:
Serve as the Lead Worker for the X-ray and Mammography compliance inspections. This includes making and tracking inspection assignments and ensuring inspections are performed in a timely manner. This also includes acting as the Lead Inspector on complex inspections and investigations. Performs on-site inspect of X-ray registrants to determine if the registrant conducts activities in accordance with K.S.A. 48-1601 et. Seq. Reviews qualifications of radiation devices (including therapy devices) users and calculate radiation exposure potential to employees and the public. The inspections are followed by a written report and recommendation for enforcement action, the first steps of which are carried out by the employee. These duties include inspections in support of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Mammography Quality Services Act (MQSA) inspection contract.
Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:
Act as project leader in performance of on-site team inspections of large and complex X-ray registrants to determine if use, possession, transfer, disposal, and storage of X-ray producing equipment are in accordance with K.S.A. 48-1601 et. Seq. Reviews qualifications of X-ray producing equipment users and calculates radiation exposure potential to employees and the public. The inspections are followed by a written report and recommendation for enforcement action, the first steps of which are carried out by the employee.

- Assess radiation exposure to patients, staff, and the public, and calculate safety thresholds to ensure proper protection.
- Prepare clear, concise written reports documenting inspection findings and compliance.
- Review X-ray machine registration applications, including evaluating operator qualifications and shielding plans.
- Collaborate on the creation of technical materials related to regulations and guidance documents.
- Participate in specialized radiological emergency response training and drills, including nuclear power plant emergency scenarios, and be ready to respond to real-world incidents involving the release or mishandling of radioactive materials, ensuring public and environmental safety.
- Licenses Required: American Registry of Radiologic Technologists and Kansas License Radiologic Technologist certifications (must be maintained throughout employment).
- Strong knowledge of radiation safety and Kansas radiological regulations.
- Detail-oriented with excellent report writing and technical communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team to ensure the safety and regulatory compliance of X-ray and mammography services.

Qualifications
- Education:
- High School, GED
- Licensing & Certification:
- Valid Driver's License - Incumbent is required to have and maintain a valid driver's license when operating a state vehicle, a private vehicle, or a rental vehicle for the benefit of the State.
- Professional Radiologic Technologist - Incumbent is required to maintain a professional radiologic technology license while in the position. (ARRT and/or Kansas LRT)
- Minimum Qualifications:
- An Associate of Science degree in Radiologic Technology or completion of a certificate based radiologic technology program and two years of experience in a radiological position may be substituted for the required education. Education in radiological studies may be substituted for experience as determined relevant by the agency.
- Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science and Arts degree with at least 30 semester hours in natural science.
- Associate’s degree in radiologic technology
- Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access
- Proofreading, editing, attention to detail
- Licensed as a Radiologic Technologist by the State Board of Healing Arts in the state of Kansas
- Completion of American Registry of Radiologic Technologist Credentialing.
- Experience in procedures to use radioactive material in radiation and high radiation areas.
- Radioactive materials handling
- Experience in Health Physics and Radiological health measurement
- Attendance at USNRC core courses
- Post-primary Mammography, CT, CV, VI, QM, Nuclear Medicine, Radiation Therapy
- Attendance at FDA Mammography and diagnostic X-ray inspector training courses.
- Certification or eligible for certification by American Board of Radiology
- Certification or eligible for certification by American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT)
- Certification or eligible for certification by Nat'l Registry of Radiation Protection Technologists
- Certification or eligible for certification by American Board of Health Physics
- Certification or eligible for certification by MQSA State or FDA Inspector
- Certification or eligible for cert by other societies or orgs dealing with radiation protection
- ARRT Certification Primary Radiology
- Post Offer Qualifications:
- Within 12 months of hire, the incumbent in this position must successfully complete a respiratory protection qualification including medical examination, respirator fit test, and is required to pass the written exam. Incumbent must maintain these qualifications on an annual basis.
- MQSA Inspector Training must be completed within one year of completing Course I, II and III of FDA MQSA Inspector Training. Inspector must maintain qualification by completing at least the minimum number of inspections and the continuing education requirements.
