POSITION PURPOSE

 

Assures and completes professional, efficient, and compassionate services of the Kansas Humane Society Forever Family Cremations Program.  Our clients and their families count on Forever Family for superior service and the highest degree of care and integrity.  We provide and model timely and courteous internal and external customer service regardless of the situation.  This position along with the Supervisor will be responsible for building and maintaining positive relationships with area veterinarians who provide their clients use of Forever Family services. 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

 

Customer Service:   Represent the Kansas Humane Society with a high degree of courtesy, compassion and professionalism to both internal and external customers.  Support and promote continued growth of the agency by demonstrating commitment and support to a positive workplace culture.  Display flexibility, openness and building of collaborative relationships within the agency as well as community wide.   

Driver:   Must be familiar with Wichita and the surrounding area and be insurable through the KHS auto insurance provider.  We seek only applicants who are customer service oriented, with the ability to treat pets and their owners respectfully and sensitively.

Operations:  Must be able to handle all emotional as well as physical aspects of working with deceased pets in the most respectful manner. Must be able to communicate both verbally and in written form.  Responsible for following scheduled activities for the crematory and related equipment.  Maintain required records and documentation.  Perform routine daily maintenance, and care of the various crematory related equipment.  Maintain interior and exterior and adjacent areas, cleaning, sweeping, etc.  Perform all other related functions as assigned.  Must be able to work effectively and productively with little or no supervision, have excellent customer service skills and be extremely detail oriented. 

Training/Dress :  Participate in staff training and development opportunities.  Participate in special events and projects.  All training will be provided for the right candidate. Follow dress code as required.

Resource Management:  Utilize resources efficiently and effectively to assure smooth operation of the Forever Family Pet Cremation Program.  Help plan and implement equipment maintenance and repairs, updates and replacement.  Anticipate needs for equipment repairs and supplies to complete the job effectively. 

Safety:  Comply with KHS Safety policies and procedures in order to maintain a healthy and safe environment.

Qualifications


EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION: High school diploma or equivalent.  Must possess a current driver’s license.  Must be insurable by KHS automobile insurance company.  Ability to fill out contracts with written information.  Mechanical skills are a plus.                     

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE:  This position requires a high degree of customer service skills, emotional intelligence, and the ability to manage awkward situations and the emotions of others.  Must have a deep respect for the human/animal bond. Must exhibit sound judgment and discretion at all times.  Must have the ability to make sound, independent decisions with limited supervision. 

DESIRED KNOWLEDGE:   A background in a caregiving or customer service field.  Should prefer and have the ability to cope with physically and emotionally demanding work.

 

 

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES AND REQUIREMENTS OF THIS POSITION

 

  • Working in extreme temperatures (heat & cold)
  • Compassionate toward others
  • Careful handling of deceased pets daily
  • Exposure in walk in freezer
  • Working inside an enclosed space
  • Repetitive motion above and below shoulder level
  • Must be able to use both hands for repetitive actions; firm grasp, fine manipulation
  • Hands exposed to water and cleaning chemicals on a repetitive basis
  • Repetitive lifting, carrying, (75 pounds) pushing, pulling of 125 pounds
  • Repetitive stooping to pick up items
  • Crawling, stooping, bending, standing, walking, mopping, kneeling on hands and knees
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Able to hear average conversations
  • Exposure to high noise levels
  • Specific vision abilities include close vision, ability to see road signs when driving, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust and focus
  • Strict adherence to all safety regulations
  • Will work weekends and some holiday hours as required 

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

 

Must be comfortable in handling, deceased dogs, cats, and small mammals, on a daily basis.  Noise exposure varies and may include barking and other animal vocalizations as well as equipment operation noise.  Animal waste contact, smells, and visual exposure are prevalent, as well as exposure to industrial cleaning supplies daily.  Employee will be exposed to heated surfaces while utilizing incinerators. 

 

MENTAL ACTIVITIES AND REQUIREMENTS OF THIS POSITION 

 

REASONING ABILITY:  Ability to deal with a variety of variables under only limited standardization and to remain focused during times of distraction.

MATHEMATICS ABILITY:  Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide all units of measure using whole numbers and common fractions.

LANGUAGE ABILITY:  Ability to read, analyze, and interpret documents. Read, interpret, and record medical data. Ability to communicate clearly (verbal & written).

EMOTIONAL ABILITY:  Ability to cope with stress, loss/ death/grief, emotional and physical fatigue, long hours, and a variety of different human personalities.
