The Kansas Water Office (KWO) was established in 1981 as the water planning, policy, coordination and marketing agency for the state. The primary statutory function of the agency is the development and implementation of the Kansas Water Plan. State law requires the Kansas Water Office to "Formulate on a continuing basis a comprehensive State Water Plan for the management, conservation and development of the water resources of the state". KWO in coordination with the KWA, also reviews all water laws and makes recommendations to the Governor and Legislature for needed legislation to ensure water policies and programs address the needs of all Kansans.

Position Summary & Responsibilities

The Grant Coordinator will have a workstation in a state building in Topeka, Kansas, with flexible work options available. 


Core Responsibilities

Grant Coordination: 

  • Manage awards and coordinate with funding recipients to ensure awards progress towards successful completion. 
  • Ensure KWO grant awards are in compliance with Kansas statutes, regulations, KWO policy and standards, as well as generally accepted accounting principles. 
  • Work with funding recipients on progress reporting and close out of awards. 
  • Contribute to and/or lead program management

Planning/Implementation Coordination:

  • Coordinates with KWO staff on planning, project, grant and/or program related engagement with the Kansas Water Authority, state agencies, federal agencies, Regional Advisory Committees and others as appropriate.
  • Work also includes review of various technical documents and project plans, and representing KWO at various meetings and events. 

Other:

  • Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor to meet the needs of the agency.  This task is reviewed by the supervisor annually for results achieved.  


Travel                                                         

This position may require some travel within the state of Kansas for meetings with potential grantees or project stakeholders. Travel is generally directed by the immediate supervisor to achieve the goals of the position. Travel must be pre-approved and follow state agency rules and regulations for reimbursement.



Qualifications

Education, Experience, and Expertise

Successful candidates will have:

  • A bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience.
  • Relevant experience working with grants and contracts and/or project management-related experience.
  • Experience in agriculture, economic development, environmental studies, and/or public policy is preferred.
  • Experience working with small municipalities and communities is preferred.
  • Candidates with specific experience or technical expertise in the fields of water quality and/or quantity, infrastructure, or policy are highly preferred.  
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and relevant grants management platforms. 
  • High level of project management and coordination capability to successfully administer project awards associated with noted work tasks. 
  • Successful coordination with agency staff and external stakeholders at various levels to implement water-related policy and programs is necessary.

  • Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize multiple tasks
  • Effective written, oral and graphic display communication skills.

  • Must be able to constructively offer or propose alternatives and opinions to achieve the organization’s objectives. 
  • Must be able to recognize areas in need of improvement and be willing to initiate positive action. 
  • Employee must work to continuously improve leadership and organizational coordination skills and customer service among diverse audiences and interests.
