Overview
The Kauai Humane Society (KHS) seeks an Adoption and Intake Specialist to assist with responding to and assisting the public via telephone, email, and in person. Assistance topics include, but are not limited to: field-trips, lost pets, pet adoption on-island and off-island, fostering of shelter pets, public clinics for spay/neuter, vaccines, and medical exams, microchipping license ordinances and services, pet boarding services, end of life services for pets, etc.
This position is full-time, 36 hours per week, and coverage on one, if not both weekend days is needed.
**Candidates already living on Kauai or candidates who have already established secured housing on Kauai within the next 2 weeks are strongly preferred and will be given first consideration for the position.**
Adoption and Intake Specialist Qualifications:
- Valid I.D. required.
- Competency to use computers, especially Microsoft Office or Google Suite products, and online database programs such as client scheduling software and/or animal/customer program databases, is required.
- High School graduate or GED equivalent preferred, suitable work experience in lieu of education considered.
- Experience working as an administrative assistant, social services or customer counseling position, or client services-related position is strongly preferred.
- Experience in working with, and confidence working to offer solutions to, upset customers is strongly preferred.
- Animal handling and/or animal welfare industry experience is strongly preferred.
Adoption and Intake Specialist Essential Job Functions:
- Collect and record accurate information from customers for animal intake purposes.
- Schedule appointments and maintain multiple appointment calendars.
- Complete paperwork and computer software records for pet adoptions, pet boarding, and other Kauai Humane Society processes.
- Facilitate our “Field-Trips with a Shelter Dog Program” daily, including preparing supplies, discussing available dogs and activities, match-making the customer with a companion for the day, checking the animal in and out of the shelter.
- Discuss end-of-life services and options with pets owners regarding euthanasia and cremation.
- Operate crematorium to process pet remains
- Local Adoptions:
- Conduct animal adoption counseling and showcase animals for adoption.
- Off-Island Adoptions:
- Assemble airline crates and package and prepare supplies for off-island adoptions, animal rescue transfers out of state, and other shelter animal and pet programs.
- Load and transport animals in company vehicles to and from the airport for off-island adoption and rescue transfer.
- Respond to telephone calls and emails from the public, on topics and services including but not limited to:
- Shelter services such as spay/neuter surgery and vaccine clinics, pet food pantry sign up assistance, boarding for owned pets, lost pet reports, pet end-of-life counseling and services, KHS memberships and donations, and adoption and foster opportunities.
- Accept and process monetary donations from clients and assist with in-kind donations.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of the intake area.
- Other duties as assigned.
Adoption and Intake Specialist Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to deal with an emotionally charged public and carry a fast-paced and changing workload which at times can be stressful.
- Must agree to work in an environment and understands that, by nature of the industry, there may be occasional exposure to injured, sick, deceased, and/or difficult animals with varying health concerns.
- Must be able to work with both dogs and cats of varying sizes, breeds, and temperaments.
- Must be able to stand, walk, bend and stoop frequently and daily to perform duties.
- Full vaccination against COVID-19 is strongly preferred.
- Must be able to perform prolonged strenuous physical activity, including lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds alone or up to 100 pounds with the help of fellow employees for short distances.
- Must be able to chase or run after animals that might escape confinement.
