What are the responsibilities and job description for the Field Service Technician or Engineer (electro-mechanical) position at KDS Windsor?
Kiln Drying System & Components, LLC "KDS" is seeking an experienced Field Service Engineer (FSE) or Field Service Technician (FST) that can grow into the position of FSE to join our growing organization. In this position, you will be responsible for industrial equipment startup and training of client personnel on our lumber dry kilns and material handling systems. The FSE will manage the implementation of our equipment utilizing best practices and technologies to optimize kiln performance, safe operation, quality, and cost effectiveness to meet company objectives and client requirements. The FSE will install various proprietary systems as well as provide process/project engineering support. Additionally, the FSE will service existing kilns to maintain optimal drying performance. The field work is to be completed primarily in the Southeastern U.S.
Essential Functions
- Travel to large-scale kiln construction sites to perform kiln commissioning assignments to include and not limited to pitching and torquing fans, calibrating actuators, terminating airlines, setting up hydraulic pushers, heat-balancing kiln, and more.
- Perform startup and calibration of pneumatic and mechanical conveying equipment, blowers, metering bins, fuel hoppers, cyclones, etc.
- Work with and instruct site super intendents and mill wrights on quality of kiln construction, field fabrication of chutes and mechanical conveying equipment, and overall site requirements needed for successful kiln commissioning.
- Act as a site liaison and project manager between many different contractors (electrical, controls engineer, concrete, sprinkler, silo, etc.) and the customer to ensure proper completion of all vendors scopes of work.
- Assess existing equipment design and performance to make recommendations on system improvement via technical report shared with the end-user.
- Provide on-site and office engineering support and technical guidance to clients and team members.
- With the field experience gained in this position, it is vital that the FSE has input into driving continuous product development.
- Develop and implement new processes, improves safety, improves quality, reduces costs, and improves product performance.
- Evaluate suppliers and contractors for the procurement of equipment, services, and labor to complete projects on time, on budget and to acceptable quality standards
- Communicate with clients and team members to define the functional and safety requirements for each project.
- Assemble all OEM documentation and writes KDS manuals to provide to the client prior to job commissioning.
- Perform other duties as assigned
Required Skills
- Must have a strong mechanical and electrical aptitude

- Must be proficient using a variety of hand tools
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Physically fit with the ability to work in hot environments and confined spaces

- Ability to travel 50% or more
Desired Skills -Preference will be given to candidates with some or all the following skills:
- Advanced ability and experience with industrial automation and PLCs
- Familiarity with industrial heat plant operation and maintenance
- Understanding of sawmill operations and procedures
- Understanding of wet/dry bulb temperatures
- Able to use devices such as multi-meters, meg-ohm meters and ammeters
- Experience with sloped grate or package boiler systems
- Familiarity with green sawdust gasification and material handling systems
- Experience with sizing and/or specifying blowers, conveying equipment, cyclones, or any other heavy industrial equipment
- Ability to read and interpret electrical and mechanical drawings
- Must understand electrical control devices, motor controls and mechanisms
- Must be able to effectively diagnose and solve problems
Required Education & Experience
- FSE: Bachelors or Associates of Science from an accredited institution in an Engineering or Technology discipline such as: Mechanical, Electro-Mechanical, Mechatronics or Industrial Engineering and/or five to ten years of manufacturing, industrial or field service work experience. Millwrights or HVAC Technicians that worked as electrical and mechanical maintenance personnel in the Sawmill or similar environment with enough experience will also be considered for FSE position.
- FST: Minimum high school diploma. Mechanical and electrical aptitude with working with electrical or mechanical maintenance for at least 1 year in a factory or processing plant environment. Just completed your apprenticeship in Mechatronics or Electrical at a Community College? This will be a perfect start to get into the industry.

- Willingness to travel 50% or more sometimes deploying for many weeks at a time
- Must pass a pre-employment drug screening
- Valid driver’s license.
- Current MVR will be required.

Salary for FSE position is: $75,000 - $100,000, DOE & ED
Salary for FST position is: $50,000 - $75,000, DOE & ED
