Position Overview: The Scenic and Prop Artist is responsible for designing, producing, and completing custom art projects, including scenery, props, signage, and painting, for company productions. This role provides support to the art department and collaborates with other departments to ensure the timely and high-quality execution of projects. The Scenic and Prop Artist will also assist in maintaining the shop, tools, and supplies, ensuring a safe and efficient work environment.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Design and create custom scenery, props, and signage for company productions
  • Collaborate with art department team members in the construction, painting, and finishing of designs
  • Maintain a clean, organized workspace and ensure proper tool and equipment upkeep
  • Review and critique personal work and that of others for quality control
  • Communicate material and supply needs to the Art Manager
  • Assist onsite for events requiring art department support
  • Follow all safety protocols and encourage safe work practices among team members
  • Track time and complete payroll tasks in the Employee Self-Service Portal
  • Assist in other departments and perform additional duties as needed

Qualifications:

  • BA/BFA in Theatre or comparable work experience preferred
  • Proven experience in scenic design, construction, or theatre production
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to adjust quickly to changes
  • Experience with carpentry, scenic painting, rigging, and/or sculpting preferred
  • Knowledge of safety protocols and the ability to mentor others on safe practices
  • Ability to lift 50-75 lbs., work in varying environmental conditions, and perform physical tasks during the workday

Pay & Benefits | What You’ll Receive

  • Hourly wage: $24.00 to $26.00, based on experience.
  • Overtime pay will be provided for hours worked beyond 40 in a workweek at 1.5x the regular rate of pay, in compliance with Illinois labor laws.
  • Paid Time Off (PTO): In compliance with Illinois State Law.
