The Volunteer Firefighter/EMS Responder serves the Borough and communities by responding to a wide variety of situations, ranging from emergencies that immediately threaten life or property to routine citizen requests for information or assistance. They perform within the scope and policies and procedures of the Kachemak Emergency Service Area and they perform their duties in the following general categories: fire suppression, emergency medical aid or high angle/low angle rescue, search and rescue (SAR), hazardous material responses, training, public education, and other activities associated with the Service Area, including station and equipment maintenance. The Volunteer Firefighter/EMS Responder normally works under the direction of the Chief of the Service Area or Department but, may also work under the direction of an appointed Officer as a direct report through the chain of command and is expected to function effectively as part of a trained team. They are also expected to perform their duties under adverse working conditions and physical conditions that may pose a high risk of personal injury or exposure to hazardous conditions and infectious diseases. The Volunteer Firefighter/EMS Responder is required to attend regularly scheduled training in order to maintain the level of knowledge, skill, and ability necessary to function safely and effectively as a firefighter in accordance with state law, Borough protocols and standard operating procedures. The work performance of a Volunteer Firefighter/EMS Responder is continuously evaluated for general knowledge, skill proficiency, and ability to work as part of a team. Any deficiencies are corrected usually through remedial training. Must be 18 years of age or older.Must have a high school diploma or G.E.D.Must possess a valid Alaska driver's license to drive the apparatus.Must have a good driving record (driver history required).Must be available to respond to emergency calls and assist with rehab of equipment etc. after the call is terminated. (Consideration will be given for special circumstances).Must attend Monthly drills held on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of every month at 6:00 PM at KESA Station 1 located at 12 mile East End Road.Must be in good physical condition and pass doctors physical for the job function applied for.Must pass a background check.Must have integrity and a high presence of moral and ethical standards.Respond to at least 15% of the annual call volume.All volunteers must successfully complete the following: Orientation Physical exam, include respirator clearance and fit testMay be required to pass a physical agility test
