A Western Emergency Services responder is one who pledges to perform and render active service in and about the duties of Firefighting and or Emergency Medical Services and other duties as requested by the Chief.Personnel must be at least 18 years of age, and be a resident of the boundaries of the Western Emergency Service Area as defined by the Kenai Peninsula Borough. Responders living outside of these boundaries may still respond, at the sole discretion of the Chief on a case-by-case basis.Personnel must fill out an application and provide the required information in order to be considered for an interview by the Chief or Deputy Chief as a new member. Individuals must also pass a criminal background/driver’s license check and are subject to a probationary period of up to one year. A responder should strive to respond to as many calls as possible but is expected to respond to at least 4 calls per month and have at least 48 hours of continuing training in Firefighting and/or Emergency Medical Services per year. Members can use shift coverage in lieu of call responses. If the member chooses to use this option the minimum shifts covered should be at least 4 shifts in a month. Any member not fulfilling these requirements may be considered inactive and their membership terminated at the sole discretion of the Chief. Special consideration for the time committed to the Department for other duties will be considered in lieu of the above requirements in the Chiefs’ determination of the status of a member.Upon acceptance of your membership, you are required to spend time with other experienced responders to complete the departments in the processing task book which encompasses standard procedures and familiarizing yourself with equipment. This should be done at least within a period of one month time from the date you are accepted into Western Emergency Services.Volunteer members will be paid a stipend of $20.00 for each response when not on shift.Volunteer members will be paid a stipend of $50 for each shift they volunteer to work. Volunteers may schedule Shift assignments through the career duty staff who is on duty during the requested shift at the requested station. Assignment as a result of a shift request is not an offer of nor should be considered employment by the Borough.
