Job Summary
The NYO Head Coach will work under the supervision of the Activities and Community Engagement Supervisor in the Yaghanen Culture and Language program. The NYO Coach is responsible for leading the NYO programming during Yaghanen, leading Kenaitze NYO teams, and responding to local requests to teach NYO at district schools to teach NYO. The NYO Head Coach will also work with the Activities and Community Engagement Supervisor to assist with Yaghanen culture and language programming in the off-season and summer. The Head Coach will travel with and chaperone youth at various NYO events while coaching a Junior and Senior team and will be responsible for managing team budgets, supplies and equipment to create a successful NYO program.
Essential Functions
- Works as part of the Yaghanen Language and Culture Team
- Develops and implement training programs for NYO athletes that focus on physical, mental, and spiritual preparation
- Incorporates traditional Indigenous practices, values, and cultural teachings into the training program
- Fosters a positive team environment that encourages teamwork, mutual respect, and commitment while providing individualized coaching to athletes based on their strengths, areas of growth, and goals
- Creates and maintain effective communication channels with athletes, parents, and program staff
- Plans and organizes team travel, accommodations, and competition schedules
- Develops and maintain relationships with other NYO coaches, officials, and organizations statewide
- Travels with/drives to and organizes transportation, for chaperoning youth at various NYO events
- Creates relationships with local post-secondary institutions to assess viability of starting a college team
- Manages team budgets, organizes fundraisers, and maintains inventory list of equipment and supplies
- Ensures compliance with Tribal, federal, state and local employment laws and regulations, Tribal policies and TERO ordinance

Qualifications
Education
- Associate's degree in Physical Education, Indigenous Studies, Sports Science, Education or related field; or a combination of education and experience in a related field may be substituted for a degree
Experience
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience as a head or assistant coach for NYO athletes and teams, or an athletic coach for other activities
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience as an NYO participant
Preferred
- Knowledge and experience working with cultural diversities
- Coaching credentials or certification, or obtain within the first 90 days of hire
License/Certification
- Must have a valid Alaska State driver's license and must remain insurable under the Tribe's policy, (or obtain within 90 days of hire)
- First Aid and CPR certification or obtain within 90 days of hire Concussion training and certification or obtain within 90 days of hire
- Sudden cardiac arrest training and certification or obtain within 90 days of hire
Special Skills
- Strong knowledge of Indigenous culture, traditions, and values
- Experience working with youth in a coaching, teaching, or mentoring capacity
- Exceptional leadership and supervisory skills
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Knowledge of sports science, injury prevention, and training techniques
- Ability to work evenings and weekends to accommodate training, travel and competition schedules
- Knowledge and experience with budgets and travel arrangements
- Proficiency with Microsoft Suite, or obtain training within 90 days of hire
- Conducts business in a service-oriented manner that is attentive, pleasant, respectful and kind when dealing with un'ina, visitors, co-workers and others
- Ability to multi-task, work independently, and meet deadlines
This position is a Covered Position subject to all requirements of the Alaska Barrier Crimes Act (ABCA) and to the Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act, (ICPA). ABCA and ICPA requirements apply and must be complied with at all times in order to remain in the position.
