Kenda American Technology Center
Kenda American Technology Center (KATC) is responsible for advancing Kenda’s global design capabilities and developing new automotive, powersport, and bicycle tires for the N. American marketplace. KATC was established in 2014 and is located in Akron, Ohio. KATC currently has a staff of 50 and is expected to grow to 70~80 employees as Kenda expands its N. American customer base. Departments include Tire Development, Tire Research, Tire Testing, and Tire Materials. Facilities include a Tire Testing Laboratory, Rubber Mixing Laboratory, and Material Analysis Laboratory in addition to the R&D office space.
Position Overview
Kenda’s research group focuses on providing leading edge tire technology and applications to improve the tire design and development process. The group focuses on all areas of the tire experience from improving the tire design process, tire analysis, and material research to new tire research. A research engineer will be responsible to develop new tire analysis techniques and support tire development and/or manufacturing. Tire research engineers use innovative applications like computer simulation, digital twin technology, and advanced mathematical modeling to solve complex problems in today’s transportation systems.
We are looking to add a highly experienced Finite Element Analysis (FEA) engineer to our research team at Kenda’s North American Technology Center. An FEA engineer will be responsible for characterizing materials and structures and analyzing tire performance by use of finite element analysis. The individual in this role would be responsible for overseeing and conducting advanced simulations to support product development and drive Kenda’s virtual technology forward.

- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, or related field with 15 years experience is required.
- Master’s Degree or PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, or related field is preferred.
- 10 years (Master’s) or 5 years (PhD) of related engineering experience is preferred.
- Experience with solid mechanics, nonlinear finite element analysis and/or material mechanics.
- Provide technical and strategic leadership for Kenda’s virtual engineering analysis efforts.
- Perform static and dynamic tire simulations using Abaqus.
- Study and apply rubber, polymer, and reinforcement mechanical behavior into virtual finite element systems.
- Post-process, interpret, and communicate simulation results to design teams.
- Develop new methods and techniques for virtual tire development.
- Coordinate with colleagues and partner teams to validate the predictions of the simulated results.
- Solve challenging tire performance problems.
- Participate in team brainstorming and new technology development.
- Work with an internationally diverse team.
- Independent functioning, inquisitive, and flexible.
- Willing to learn new techniques and expand ones’ knowledge.
- Willingness to travel.
- Experience with Abaqus and Hyperworks.
- Experience in writing scripts and subroutines for finite element codes.
- Programming experience with Python, C, and/or JavaScript.
