Kenda American Technology Center

Kenda American Technology Center (KATC) is responsible for advancing Kenda’s global design capabilities and developing new automotive, power sport, and bicycle tires for the North American marketplace. Established in 2014, KATC is located in Akron, Ohio. KATC currently has a staff approximately 50 (mostly engineers and technicians). Further growth is expected as Kenda expands its North American customer base. Departments include Tire Development, Tire Research, Tire Testing, and Tire Materials. Facilities include a Tire Testing Laboratory, Rubber Mixing Laboratory, and Material Analysis Laboratory in addition to the R&D office space.

Position Overview

The Kenda American Technology Center (KATC) is looking for a self-starting, organized, detail-minded individual for a Mechanical Engineering position within the Testing Engineering Team. KATC houses a wide variety of test equipment which all require management and upkeep. Testing engineers are responsible for the management with roles including but not limited to : Working with test machine operators, managing maintenance and calibration, creation of standardization documents, design of tooling and fixtures, etc. One of the more important responsibilities of the Test Engineer is to develop an intimate knowledge and understanding of the test data produced by assigned test machines, and the interpretation of that data in assessing tire performance. Testing engineers may also be responsible for purchase or design of new test equipment, development of new tests, and research of new testing technique / technologies.

The ideal candidate for this role must possess strong communication and problem-solving skills. In addition, excellent time management skills are needed to balance multiple tasks and deadlines. A comfort level with hand / power tools is a plus. Importantly, the position requires the ability to learn the skills needed for the primary duties of the position, as well as a willingness to provide support for any other testing-related activities that may arise.

Education

  • Bachelor of Science (or higher) in Mechanical Engineering is required
  • 0-20 years of work experience in an engineering or technical role is required
  • Responsibilities

  • Oversee the management, operation, and ongoing maintenance of test machines to ensure optimal performance and reliability
  • Develop a deep understanding of the test data generated by assigned machines, performing regular analyses and reviewing available literature to inform improvements and insights
  • Assist Development Engineers in interpreting test data and understanding its impact on tire performance, providing actionable insights
  • Innovate and develop new test equipment through CAD designs, and create detailed test procedures to enhance testing capabilities
  • Write and maintain work instructions, test standards, maintenance guidelines, and safety documentation for assigned test machines, ensuring adherence to protocols
  • Communicate effectively with development engineers as needed to ensure accuracy and consistency in test data and results
  • Work closely with other members of the testing team in a collaborative environment to share knowledge and ensure seamless execution of testing processes
  • Perform other duties as assigned
  • Experience Required

  • Strong understanding of data analysis techniques, including data mining, statistical methods, and graphical data representation
  • Proficiency in using CAD software such as Inventor, Solid Edge, or similar tools
  • Expertise in Microsoft Office Suite
  • A willingness and ability to learn new skills and processes, adapting to the evolving needs of the team
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong ability to identify issues, analyze problems, and develop solutions
  • Ability to efficiently manage time, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
