Job Overview
We are seeking a Head Sawyer for our hardwood sawmill. The ideal candidate will have previous experience operating Cleereman carriages and USNR controls. Knowledge of NHLA grading rules is a plus. Responsible for daily maintenance of machines and have ability to identify any potential issues. Must be an excellent communicator and team player.
Responsibilities
- Operate head saw, efficiently and safely to maximize production.
- Operate the head saw, log carriage, and conveyor system to saw logs into boards/cants.
- Position logs on to the carriage to maximize yield and minimize waste.
- Monitor the performance of scanners and make adjustments as needed.
- Operate mechanical log turners to turn the log over on the carriage for subsequent cuts.
- Perform daily maintenance on head saw and other equipment as required per.
- Saw logs for grade, ensure production quality control.
- Maintain a safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.
- Contribute to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed and helping those around you.
Qualifications/Skills
- Effective use of judgment and decision-making skills, attention to details.
- Troubleshooting and mechanical ability.
- Ability to clear carriage tracks and scanner bars of debris.
- The ability to keep a fast pace while not sacrificing quality, or safety.
- Willingness to work in a total team environment, comfortable with repetition yet adaptable to change in position, process, product, procedure, etc., positive attitude, willingness to share and implement new ideas.
- Proficient with operating various sawmill equipment, including band saws and edgers.
- Lean manufacturing.
Physical Requirements
- While performing duties as a Head Sawyer, the employee is regularly required to climb into and off machinery and equipment numerous times daily.
- The employee works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to vibration.
- The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms.
- The employee is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, and communicate.
- The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds of weight and occasionally lift and move up to 100 pounds of weight.
- Specific vision abilities required include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
- Noise levels can be moderate to loud, hearing protection required.
- Safety glasses and safety shoes are required.
