General Description:
The Kiln and Yard Supervisor is responsible for day-to-day safety performance, effective planning, delegating, coordinating and decision making onsite with the support of the Site Manager to attain desirable production and efficiency results in the Yard, Kilns & Boiler Area. The Kiln and Yard Supervisor will support Human Resources (HR) in the hiring process for operations personnel while promoting employee education as needed throughout the organization.
Responsibilities:
- Time and Attendance – Manage Kiln/Regrade/Stacker staff time and attendance
- Develop, maintain, and manage the daily kiln/boiler schedules
- Lead morning huddles to set daily expectations for Safety, Quality, Hot Topics and Production
- Work with site leadership and direct reports to achieve Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s)
- Perform daily Quality Control (QC) inspections
- Plan and execute the kiln schedule with operator based upon sales forecasts and demands
- Support sawmills, flooring mill, regrade and shipping productively with lift operators
- Responsible for coordinating and performing minor maintenance and PMs on equipment. Coordinate with maintenance team for more in depth repairs.
- Responsible to understand how inventory levels are affecting proper storage of incoming and outgoing lumber.
- Revising old and writing new procedures as needed
- Enforcing KLC Policies and procedures while maintaining a positive working environment
- Operating a chop saw to cut samples daily
- Overseeing Kiln & Boiler Operations, daily moisture content of kiln samples and making adjustments to ensure proper drying rates.
- Planning kiln loads, establishing proper kiln loading procedure, culture
- Reading, understanding, executing KLC’s Dry Kiln Manual
- Developing Standard operating procedures (SOP’s) as needed
- Operating forklifts to load and unload kilns and trucks
- Verification of all kiln functions (vents, air flow, exiting air speed (L,M,R))
- Develop a schedule to have coverage 7 full days a week to perform kiln checks at a minimum and unload/load kilns the day they are complete
- Plan and direct boiler operation, routine maintenance, annual inspections, weekend coverage, and emergency response. Work with Kiln Operator (Primary Boiler Operator) to develop the team to be able to support weekend/emergency coverage rotation.
- Scheduling snow removal team to ensure safe conditions exist
- All other tasks as assigned
