Location: District-Wide

Hours: Variable/As Assigned

Rate: $17.14 per Hour

This position is for current Washington State University Teaching Bridge students only.

JOB DESCRIPTION / ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

This position will involve working as a substitute/on-call paraeducator to assist schools on a program need basis. The positions will be varied and may include instruction with and care of basic education and disabled students in self-contained and regular education settings, recess and/or crosswalk duty, providing clerical assistance, and performing other job-related duties as assigned. All duties of the position will be performed within the scope of Kennewick School District policies and procedures, including regular attendance and punctuality.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Official transcripts of all levels of education, including high school, required within 30 days of hire.
  • Must be a current WSU Teaching Bridge student/candidate.
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Must be able to meet the Physical Demands of the position.
  • Must pass a background check, which includes employee paid fingerprinting.
  • Positive recommendations/references from previous supervisors. Family and friend will not be considered acceptable references.
Completion of Safe Schools web-based safety program within 30 days of hire and yearly thereafter.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

  • Must be able and available to work during non-WSU class days.
  • Must be able to work in any classroom, including all special services classrooms.
  • Willing to care for disabled children, including toileting and other needed responsibilities.
  • Must uphold board policies and follow administrative procedures.
  • Must take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
  • Must attend in-service trainings or other meetings as required, as well as attend any training as directed by management.
  • Evidence of ability to assess and correct issues involving safety.
  • Evidence of ability to establish and maintain a tactful, cooperative and effective relationship with students, parents, staff, fellow employees and management.
  • Evidence of ability to approach assigned work in a professional manner, working toward the common goal of teamwork, pride in service delivery and continuous improvement
  • Must demonstrate sufficient command of the English language to communicate verbally and in writing with students, parents, district staff members and other concerned people regarding all aspects of their job-related activities.
  • Must be able to use basic computer programs to maintain records, enter timecard information and read and respond to email.
  • Must be willing to become first-aid certified if required.
Must have and maintain evidence of positive evaluations, excellent attendance and punctuality, evidence of ability to be self-disciplined and a self-starter.

QUALIFICATIONS PREFERRED

  • The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to cope with unpredictability; be flexible, diplomatic and cooperative; follow the teacher’s directions; model appropriate behavior; demonstrate patience, enthusiasm and a positive attitude toward working with students with disabling conditions; maintain composure in difficult situations.
  • Employee must value and maintain the confidential nature of sensitive student information
  • Successful experience working with school-aged children.
  • Successful experience at recess duty desirable.
  • Demonstrated clerical skills, training and/or experience in using computers and other technology applications.
  • Ability to be flexible with the varied demands of the position.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work with a variety of people.
  • Ability to follow directions.
  • Willingness to work with all children within the school regardless of abilities.
  • Willingness to support and promote the classroom teachers and to maintain a warm and friendly relationship with those teachers.
Willingness to care for disabled children, including toileting and other needed responsibilities.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Mobility: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and walk for prolonged periods of time, push or pull 18-26 lbs., sit, kneel and crouch, twist and bend, use hands to type, finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arm. Employees must be able to operate their own motor vehicle and drive between sites as needed.
  • Sense: The employee is required to talk/hear conversations and other sounds. The employee must be able to communicate effectively in person and over the telephone. The employee is required to taste and smell. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, far vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Lifting: The employee must be able to lift or move up to 18-26 pounds; must also be able to lift overhead. The employee may be required to physically move quickly in an emergency or while performing student supervision duties.

  • Physical Hazards: While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to work outdoors in a wide variety of temperatures; from -10 degrees F to 100 degrees F . The employee may be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The noise level in this work environment is moderate.
