Summary
The Safety manager leads efforts to facilitate, promote, and supply necessary resources to the field and the safety team (Project Safety Representatives and Safety Coordinators) to elevate the safety culture at Kent Companies.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Monitor and update current safety rules and Standard Operating Procedures. Provide subject matter expertise in developing policies, procedures, and best practices. Convey any changes to the field and the safety team.
- Lead and participate in safety team meetings, safety committees, field training/educational events, industry events, and stand downs.
- Review all accident, injury, and near-miss investigations submitted by the field and by safety coordinators as assigned. Work with the field personnel involved to determine the underlying safety hazards or conditions that resulted in the incident were addressed and corrected. Maintain the safety log of all incidents.
- Select and deliver Toolbox Talks that are current and applicable to Kent employees and operations. Monitor the Toolbox Talks program. Ensure all Toolbox Talks are current and applicable to Kent employees and operations. Write custom Toolbox Talks that address recent incidents or hazards in the field.
- Perform and document job site inspections/audits. Complete safety inspection/observation, including a written summary of safety hazards or unsafe conditions and how they were abated. Distribute the finished report to the project team, field personnel, division manager, and Safety Director.
- Review and track job site inspections/audits for assigned safety coordinators/safety engineers to ensure accuracy, completeness, and follow-through on corrective actions.
- Manage and collaborate Workers' Compensation/auto accident/property damage Claims with the workers compensation specialist(s)
- Investigate all injuries, property damage, and auto accidents.
- Ensure medical treatment is being followed.
- Oversee the companys mandatory post-accident drug screening.
- Oversee the Return-to-Work Program
- Review reports submitted by safety coordinators.
- Report quarterly on loss runs and proactively update the Safety Director on positive and negative trends.
- Determine appropriate levels and standards for Kent Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). For assigned regions/markets, oversees purchasing of PPE, provides uniformity, and implements PPE program.
- Document proper assessment of new PPE
- Maintain the OSHA log with the collaboration of the workers compensation specialist.
- Lead quarterly and annual planning and goals development for assigned region/market. Report on quarterly goals and safety metrics for assigned territories.
- Lead the development of overall risk mitigation and safety culture for the company.
- Develop a budget for safety expenditures for assigned projects.
- Quarterly Reports for Key Performance Indicates (KPIs) submitted to the Safety Director.
- Facilitate and record the weekly national safety meeting.
- Maintain the Employee Training Log in collaboration with the senior safety training coordinator/manager. Certify that mandatory training has been completed on a timely basis and is documented. Schedule retraining and license or permit renewals as needed.
- Generate training reports for customers, the project team, and the project management team.
- Generate Site Specific Safety Plans
- Hold job site meetings to instruct the project team on the hazards and safety procedures that are unique to that job. (i.e., deck construction, shoring, and fall protection)
- JHAs
- Document and communicate with the project manager.
- Inspect shored decks before the placement of concrete in collaboration with the project superintendent:
- Erected according to shoring drawings.
- Meets Kents SOPs and current standards.
- Certify that safety requirements are in place.
- Discuss under deck lighting and pour watch duties.
- Be a resource person and coordinator for Kents field safety officers (superintendents, foremen, and crew leaders) and safety coordinators/engineers as assigned.
Work Environment/Physical Demand
This position will work in office and job site environments. Frequent travel, including overnight stays, is required, and it requires extended periods of sitting and standing.
Position type and expected hours of work.
This is a full-time office/field position. Typical hours will range from 45-50 hours per week and are subject to change. This role requires working nontypical days and irregular hours based on construction schedules. Due to the critical nature of the role, accepting phone calls even during nontypical workdays and hours is also necessary.
Travel
This position requires frequent travel. Travel includes office locations, job sites, off-site meetings and is subject to change.

Required Experience, Education, and Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in environmental safety & health, or associate in health safety and environment, or 3-5 years of relevant construction industry safety experience.
- OSHA 500, CSMC, or equivalent safety certification
- Valid drivers license
- Must have reliable transportation to the workplace(s)/ job location(s).
- Ability to successfully pass a background check related to
- Ability to pass drug screening.
- Must be able to work in the United States without corporate sponsorship now and within the future.
Preferred education and experience
- Bilingual (English/Spanish)
- Concrete industry experience
