Summary

The Safety Specialist position will support field operations and monitor job site safety practices, ensuring that management is up to date on current, new, and revised safety standards and regulations. This position will work to strengthen the safety culture while adhering to our core values and delivering on the mission statement of Kent Power. Perform regular, monthly (at a minimum) visits to each Foreman’s job sites. Complete safety inspections and record and address both positive and negative observations made in the field.

Essential Functions

  • Perform regular, monthly (at a minimum) visits to each Foreman’s job sites. Complete safety inspections and record and address both positive and negative observations made in the field.
  • Maintain and ensure that all safety equipment on job sites is inspected and up to date.
  • Work to develop Project Safety Plan, Emergency Action Plans, Wire Pull Plans, and other associated plans, as required.
  • Ensure that all contractors work safely in accordance with the site safety plan.
  • Lead and participate in incident reporting and investigations as needed.
  • Assist in safety manual improvements, and OSHA/MIOSHA written program development.
  • Lead in-house training with managers and employees regarding health and safety issues, risks, and related topics.
  • Work directly with management teams to develop new safety policies, refine existing policies, and draft construction-related safety specifications.
  • Regularly attend bi-monthly tailgate meetings to discuss field safety topics and issues, and to assist with any resolutions. Actively work to develop on-going tailgate trainings.
  • Act as a champion for all Kent Power initiatives, processes, and programs.

Work Environment

This job operates in a professional office environment, on the road and on the job site. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. On job sites, the employee is occasionally exposed to a variety of extreme conditions. The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud. This position may be performed in outside weather conditions, as necessary.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to grasp, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must frequently lift or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Travel Required

Up to 90% of travel is required. Travel will be daily to job sites.

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
  • Five years of experience in the Safety Field, preferably in the utility industry
  • OSHA 10/30/500/501 certification/ First Aid/CPR training
  • 5 years of demonstrable safety management-related experience
  • A professional safety certification from an industry-recognized safety organization; or
  • Root cause analysis training
