Kentucky Legal Aid is seeking a Paralegal to support our attorneys in delivering vital legal services to low-income, elderly, and disabled clients across our 35-county service area. This role is integral to ensuring access to justice for individuals facing critical challenges. This position will work out of our Bowling Green, KY office.
Position Overview
As a Paralegal, you will work closely with staff attorneys to provide comprehensive legal assistance to clients. Your key responsibilities will include:
- Preparing and drafting motions, pleadings, judgments, statements, documents, and other correspondence (e.g., debt and asset lists, witness affidavits, child support worksheets, responsive pleadings, etc.)
- Filing pleadings with court clerks promptly.
- Conducting legal research.
- Scheduling appointments, court appearances, mediations, and depositions, and maintaining attorney calendars.
- Conducting client interviews and maintaining effective communication throughout the legal process, serving as a liaison between the client and attorney.
- Preparing trial notebooks and assisting attorneys during trial settings.
- Preparing and reviewing discovery packages, including disclosure statements, interrogatory answers, and production requests.
- Ensuring compliance with Legal Services Corporation (LSC) regulations and Kentucky Legal Aid policies for case management and timekeeping.
- Serving as a liaison between clients, attorneys, and external resources, such as healthcare providers, banks, and accountants.
- Accompanying staff attorneys to court and other case-related locations as needed.
Qualifications
Required:
- Working knowledge of local court rules and relevant state and federal laws.
- Strong organizational, written, and oral communication skills.
- Attention to detail and proven ability to handle sensitive data confidentially.
- Proficiency in MS Office applications.
Preferred:
- Certificate of completion from an ABA-approved paralegal program or an associate degree in paralegal studies preferred, or equivalent experience.
- Prior experience working with low-income clients is preferred.
