Kenyon College is conducting a search for a qualified candidate to fill the position of Civil Rights/Title IX Deputy Coordinator. A member of the President’s division, the Civil Rights/Title IX Deputy Coordinator reports to the Civil Rights/Title IX Coordinator. The Deputy Coordinator has expertise in cultural competency and can demonstrate familiarity with, and respect for, diverse racial, ethnic, cultural identities and gender identities. Specifically, the Deputy Coordinator assists with monitoring and coordinating compliance with nondiscrimination laws alleging discrimination on the basis of race, color, national origin, ancestry, ethnicity, sex, gender, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, disability, age, religion, medical condition, genetic information, veteran status, marital status, familial status, parenting, pregnancy, or any other characteristic protected by state, local or federal law. Duties may require evening and weekend availability on campus and the ability to respond to urgent situations in person and/or by phone, video conference, and email on evenings and weekends. The position is a full-time, 12-month appointment.

Essential Functions

Intake and Response

  • As directed, receive and assist as directed in the processing of reports and complaints of harassment and discrimination occurring on the basis of one or more of the protected characteristics documented in the College’s Non-Discrimination Statement.
  • Establish, implement, and monitor supportive measures.
  • Assist as requested in the execution of investigations of Section 504/ADA grievances in accordance with the College’s established grievance procedures. This may involve interviewing complainants, respondents, and witnesses, reviewing documents and other relevant materials.

Training & Education

  • Assist in the review of the established College policy, process, protocols, and practices to ensure compliance with federal regulations, guidance, and state laws.
  • Aid in creating and disseminating educational materials and in-service training tailored to faculty, staff, and students.
  • Share in the creation and facilitation of training and education sessions designed for members of the Kenyon community.
  • Assist the Civil Rights/Title IX Coordinator in the facilitation and implementation of the online training programs required to be completed by all students and new employees.
  • As directed, communicate with the Registrar’s Office, faculty, and staff to ensure mandatory student completion of online training for new and returning students.
  • As directed, collaborate with Human Resources to ensure mandatory completion of online training for new employees as part of their onboarding process.
  • Work collaboratively with campus and community partners.

Other Duties

  • According to established office protocol, organize and maintain records of all reports filed, including all formal complaints.
  • Participate in conferences, workshops, and trainings to stay current in the field.
  • Serve on related committees and panels as requested. Evening and weekend availability may be required.
  • Serve on-call according to the schedule established by the Civil Rights/Title IX Coordinator.
  • Maintain all work expense receipts and associated documentation.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned or requested.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Success Factors

  • Knowledge of current state and federal law and regulations, College-specific policies, practices and procedures, in the field of education related to harassment and other discriminatory practices that violate Title IX, Title VII, Title VI, Section 504/ADA, and other state and federal laws or regulations.
  • Ability to manage a caseload of civil rights reports and complaints to a prompt, effective, and equitable remedy.
  • Maintain professional qualification through ongoing training and professional development.
  • Ability to deliver training programs to all constituencies of the College.
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships with members of the campus community, campus organizations, and community partners.
  • Effective project management, organization, and analytical skills.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail, strong problem-solving skills, the ability to deal with confidential and sensitive information.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusivity, as well as the ability to work with a wide range of constituencies (students, staff, faculty, parents, administrators, attorneys, alumni) with diplomacy and tact.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and act independently, take initiative, and exercise sound judgment.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree with 3-5 years of relevant experience in higher education, law, organizational leadership, student personnel, compliance, or related field. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Knowledge of and experience with issues related to gender-based violence.
  • The successful candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to diversity and multicultural competency in working with diverse populations.
  • Ability to demonstrate discretion when dealing with sensitive issues, exercise sound judgment, and handle a large work volume within an established timeline.
  • Ability to work for long periods at a computer.
  • Maintaining a positive perspective is crucial to success in this role.
