What are the responsibilities and job description for the Polymers Research Specialist position at Kenyon College?
Job Opportunity
Kenyon College is a highly selective private liberal arts college seeking a qualified individual for a full-time postdoctoral position in the laboratory of Yutan Getzler. This position is funded through a Research at Undergraduate Institutions (RUI) grant from the National Science Foundation to study controlled polymer degradation.
The immediate goal for our NSF-funded program is synthesis and characterization of linear and cyclic polyesters via ring-opening polymerization of commercially available and novel lactones using coordination compounds. Several variants of the novel lactones are in hand on multi-gram scales, and their syntheses are well developed. Initial conditions for polymerization of commercially available monomers are established.
This position is especially well suited to those interested in pursuing a career as a teacher-scholar at a primarily undergraduate institution. The postdoctoral fellow will develop the skills necessary to succeed in a tenure-track position at a PUI through collaboration on undergraduate teaching and student mentoring with Dr. Getzler.
Responsibilities
The primary duties of the postdoc will be to conduct research; compile, analyze, and synthesize data; and disseminate results in presentations and scientific publications. Additionally, the postdoc will help mentor undergraduate researchers and participate in the life of the faculty with opportunities for professional development and mentorship.
Qualifications
Applicants must have completed their Ph.D. in organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, polymer chemistry, or a related field. Applicants should demonstrate evidence of prior research experience, excellent written and oral communication skills, and a strong background in synthesis and characterization. Experience with air-free techniques is preferred. Applicants should have a commitment to undergraduate education and a strong interest in developing teaching and mentoring skills.
Kenyon College values diversity and seeks to create an inclusive environment that benefits students, faculty, and staff. The Chemistry department and the College are committed to providing a welcoming and supportive community for all.
