Occupational Health & Safety Manager

Manage occupational health and safety program within KCS and provide expert advice and recommendations.

Skills :

  • Lead continuous improvement plan for occupational health &safety
  • Engage in operational decision making
  • Interpretation of state and federal regulatory governance
  • Project design and delivery
  • Effectively communicate safety strategy and direction with business units
  • Maintains effective relationships with external stakeholders
  • Investigate Department of Labor issues
  • Communicate subject matter expertise
  • Readily determine operational direction from provided strategy / vision
  • Knowledge and Experience :

  • 5 years operational experience in an occupational health & safety role
  • Demonstrated understanding of the concepts within Systems Safety
  • Certification in Occupational Health & Safety (degree preferred)
  • Understanding of the operational application of theoretical concepts such as safety culture
  • Thorough understanding of FRA CFRs and OHSA regulations
  • MS Office software
  • Other software (MS Project, Comply 365, Power BI, MS Visio, Coruson, TRMS)
  • Key Accountabilities :

    Health & Safety Planning

  • Provide governance for the Operational Safety Compliance Plan with respect to Health & Safety requirements as required within the contract
  • Develop inspection schedule targeting fire prevention, safety equipment and first aid supplies
  • Inspect and evaluate workplace environments, equipment and practices to ensure compliance with safety standards and regulations
  • Maintain inventories of hazardous materials
  • Maintain Health & Safety Content of safety related training
  • Maintain expert level knowledge in Department of Labor regulations directly impacting Health & Safety
  • Ensure all facilities have emergency evacuation plans and conduct drills
  • Event (Accident / Incident) Management

  • Investigate health related complaints
  • Perform on-call duties for event management as per the roster
  • Participate in investigations and prepare reports within required timelines
  • Operational Risk Management

  • Manage governance for Operational Risk Management including the conduct of risk assessments, develop of risk management plans, employment of risk registers and tools for their conduct
  • Lead risk assessments with operational departments
  • Mentor business units in risk management
  • Review risk assessments and risk management plans in accordance with risk governance such that safety culture continually evolves
  • Prepare risk register
  • Change Management

  • Provide review and guidance for Operational Change Management processes with the business units
  • Review change management plans with business units
  • Engagement

  • Represent Safety at various meetings – safety committees, and calls
  • Develop and maintain a trust-based constructive / productive working relationship with the leadership and management of the business units
  • Liaison with specialists such as Industrial Hygienist
  • Publication of safety critical communication (eg. Bulletins / flashes)
  • Organizational Specific

  • This position is required to be on-call on the duty roster. The organization may provide logistics such a company vehicle and tablet for the purpose of this function.
  • This role may be required to perform other functions under the direction of the Director Operational Safety
