The Quality Control Checker will be responsible for playing a critical role in ensuring the highest standards of quality in finished products and services from Kern Steel Fabrication.
Job Duties:
- Conduct thorough inspections of raw materials, cut parts, and fabricated assemblies to ensure they meet project requirements (shop drawings, specifications, etc.), regulatory requirements, and KSF quality standards. Inspections should include overall dimensions, hole size & location, part location & orientation, weld prep, weld type/size/appearance, etc.
- Maintain detailed and accurate records of inspection and testing results, document any deviations from quality standards, and report findings to leadership.
- Monitor and enforce adherence to KSF quality control processes, protocols, and procedures throughout the fabrication process in accordance with KSF QMS.
- Provide informal mentoring to fabrication team on methods or techniques to improve fabrication quality.
- Facilitate and evaluate weld testing for potential new hires or promotions within fabrication team.
- Coordinate with 3rd party inspectors and testing laboratories to validate product/material adherence to project and regulatory quality requirements.
- Collaborate with project management, production, purchasing, and fabrication departments to address and resolve quality issues in a timely manner in accordance with KSF QMS.
- Identify opportunities for process improvements to enhance overall product/service quality and efficiency and propose and/or implement changes when necessary.
- Conduct root cause analysis for quality issues, implement corrective actions, and track the effectiveness of those actions.
- Update STRUMIS production tracking system to verify completion of QC checks at established hold points, e.g., fit check, weld check, final check, etc.
- May be asked to assist in fitting and welding tasks or other operations department tasks, as needed, dependent on shop workload, production schedule, and resource availability.
- Must maintain a safe and clean working environment by complying with KSF procedures, rules, and regulations.
Requirements
Knowledge of:
- Fabrication or Welding QMS (quality management systems).
- AISC 207-20, ISO 9001:2015, AWS D1.1 2020, AWS D1.8 2021.
- STRUMIS MRP software or similar preferred.
- Microsoft Office products, e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.
Education & Experience:
- Three (3) – five (5) years of welding and/or fitting experience OR CWI certification.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Certifications in quality control or related fields are a plus.
- Experience in quality control or a related role, with a strong understanding of quality assurance principles.
- Structural steel experience strongly preferred.
Ability to:
- Work with exceptional attention to detail and accuracy in assessing products against established criteria.
- Communicate effectively, verbally and in writing. Must be able to effectively report findings and collaborate with teams across the company.
- Work independently and in a team. Must be able to contribute to a quality-focused work environment.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift, push, and pull up to 50 pounds.
- Work is primarily performed outside.
- Noise level is moderately loud to loud.

Salary : $26 - $32
