POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Aquatics Director, the Swim Instructor is responsible for teaching swim lessons in a safe, professional and caring manner according to the established curriculum to ensure the participants have an overall positive experience and eventually progress to the next level.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Prepares and carries out daily lesson plans according to established class requirements.
- Keeps accurate records on progress of individual students and make decisions on appropriate class levels.
- Teaches in the water every class and never turns back to the class or leaves the class unattended.
- Enforces specific safety rules and regulations to prevent risks to participants.
- Completes and submits progress reports and midsession reports.
- Presents materials that are challenging yet appropriate for every class member and class level.
- Sets out necessary equipment needed for class and puts equipment away after class.
- Records daily class attendance roster and communicates with parents/guardians about child’s progress in class when needed.
- Secures a qualified substitute for replacement when unable to teach a class and notifies Aquatics Director in advance, when possible.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum 16 years of age. *15 years old based on availability.
- Current YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor Certification or American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification is preferred.
- Ability to understand and motivate people.
CERTIFICATIONS:
- Bloodborne Pathogens/Child Abuse Prevention every year
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Ability to teach in the water for long periods of time.
- Remain alert to dangerous situations while sitting, standing, swimming, or walking for various lengths of time.
- Able to assist participants of any age or weight if they are having difficulty swimming during the lesson by giving them a flotation device and/or assisting them to safety.
