Early Head Start (EHS) Classroom Substitute
Position Summary
The Early Head Start (EHS) Classroom Substitute ensures the safety and supervision of children in the classroom while fostering a positive, age-appropriate learning environment. This role involves engaging with children (ages birth to 3 years) through interactive play and learning experiences that support all areas of development, including cognitive, motor, social-emotional, self-help, communication, and sensory regulation.
Key Responsibilities
Classroom Support
- Provide developmentally appropriate learning experiences under the direction of the teacher or supporting staff to promote school readiness.
- Adjust teaching strategies to meet individual needs, including children with IFSPs, behavioral challenges, dual language learners, and diverse abilities.
- Treat children with respect, demonstrate genuine interest, and use positive guidance techniques during interactions.
- Maintain child-to-adult ratios in the classroom.
- Assist in maintaining cleanliness in classrooms and playgrounds as assigned.
Communication and Collaboration
- Update team members on child and family status via email, voicemail, team meetings, or other appropriate modes of communication.
- Respond promptly and professionally to voicemails, emails, faxes, and other communications.
- Maintain an accurate work calendar and inform the supervisor of schedule changes.
- Accurately document hours worked using the electronic timecard program.
Home Visits and Assessments
- Assist in planning and supporting home visits and meeting 45-day requirements under the direction of the teacher or supporting staff.
- Support developmental and behavioral assessments for children entering the program.
Early Head Start Implementation
- Work with children and parents from diverse backgrounds, including those with special needs, in EHS classrooms.
- Provide quality, responsive infant/toddler care while maintaining positive communication with parents.
- Ensure compliance with Early Head Start policies, procedures, and Head Start Performance Standards.
Preferred Qualifications
- Education: High School Diploma required; CDA with infant/toddler credentials preferred but not required.

Certifications:
- Food Handlers Certificate within 90 days of hire.
- CPR and First Aid Certification within 90 days of hire.

Skills:
- Effective oral and written communication in English.
- Basic computer proficiency and familiarity with office software.
- Bi-lingual (English/Spanish) preferred but not required.

Clearances:
- Ability to pass an FBI background check (upon hire and every five years).
- Ability to pass a TB test upon hire.
Work Schedule
This is an on-call position to meet the needs of the agency. Long-term assignments may be available.
